George’s has Big Sandwiches and Big Disappointments
Located in the Italian Market, according to their sign George’s has been selling sandwiches since the 1930’s. I didn’t dare ask, since everybody behind the counter had the appropriate Italian Market gruffness thing pointed my way. I barely had to withstand the evil eyes for long, my sandwiches were delivered to me quickly. The frill level is real low here, and I am fairly certain thats how everyone likes it.
I got my roast pork sandwich topped with provolone. The meat was a little bland and some of the pieces were unpleasantly fatty. On the plus side, this sandwich has the whole enormous thing going for it.
Better was the monster veal combo sandwich that I ended up with, since I couldn’t choose between the ground veal and the BBQ veal. I got mine topped with a whole load of onions.
While I was all hopeful about this South Philly staple, I have to lamentably report that I just can’t endorse it like Andrew Zimmern. I would rather get my sandwiches from somewhere else. Hint: Paesano’s, down the street.
THE + (What somebody who likes this place would say)
- Speedy service, albeit gruff
- Big portion sizes
THE – (What somebody who doesn’t like this place would say)
- There are better sandwiches in the neighborhood
