Sweet Tofu Custard at Heung Fa Chun Sweet House
I have passed by Heung Fa Chun Sweet House countless times and decided it was time to stop in. They have a small menu of little snacks, many of which are desserts. The very first item on the menu is sweet do-fu dessert. That seemed harmless enough. And for $1.25, I had to grab one.
Sweet do-fu, or douhua, is a Chinese custard made with super soft tofu and it can be sweet or savory. I have had the Szechuan version which tops the tofu off with fiery chili oil. At Heung Fa, you can get a little container of sweet juice or sweet & ginger juice to pour onto your flavorless tofu. I got it with ginger.
I poured the whole container of the sugar liquid on and it was just enough to sweeten the whole pint of tofu. It was a mild, pleasant sweetness and the ginger was a nice extra layer. The velvety texture of the soft tofu was very soothing. The tofu was so so so soft. This would be my go-to dish if I were toothless.

Juice? That’s the sweet syrup for the douhua. Good stuff! I’m sure you’re eaten in in NY too? Maybe…
