PROFILE: L.A. Lunch’er “Brandon”

As is customary on Midtown Lunch, every Tuesday we profile a random reader to get their recommendations for the best spots to lunch near their work. This week it’s Brandon, a downtown luncher who hates Starry Kitchen!?

Name: Brandon

Age: You mean kara-age?

Occupation: I work in fashion and music. Wow..that was such an LA thing to say. I’m such a hipster.

Where in L.A. do you Work?: McManus Studios. DTLA.

Favorite Kind of Food: Japanese. There are way too many options within this cuisine for it not to be my favorite.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Starry Kitchen? Am I allowed to say that?

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch: Sashimi lunch at Sushi-Gen (422 E 2nd St). The Nozawa at Sugarfish (600 W. 7th St.) Banh Mi at Spice Table (114 S. Central Ave.) Ceviche and arroz con pollo at Mo-Chica. Any sandwich off the special menu at Mendocino Farms.

The “goto” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often? Thursday and Friday you will always find us making the short drive to Silverlake for Ricky’s Fish Tacos (1400 N. Virgil). No one in LA does fish tacos better than Ricky. Fact.

Places you’ve discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch: Aloha Cafe (410 E. 2nd St.) Char Siu plate. Its so conveniently located and simple. How can I not love it?

The farthest place you’ll drive for lunch on a normal day? I have a very twisted perception on what is considered too far to drive for food. My family moved from LA to Corona when I was a kid, which is a little over an hour south of here. Growing up my family would constantly make the trek up to LA for food whenever they could, so driving an hour or so for a meal was a regular thing. With that being said…the other day when a friend said he wanted clam chowder for lunch, I suggested Splash’s in Pismo Beach.

Dream job location (anywhere in the world), purely for lunch purposes, and why? Considering that I don’t really see myself working and living outside of the United States anytime soon. New York City. You just can’t beat it. I have had some of the best meals of my life in that city.

Got a recommendation for Bradon? Put it in the comments. And, as always, if you want to be next week’s Profiled: L.A. Lunch’er (or know somebody you’d want to nominate), email me- zach@midtownlunch.com.

  • LOL that is HIIILARIOUS! I love it when someone doesn’t like something (or US in this case) so much they gave it/us an entire category.. SCORE! mwahahahaha ;)

Well, you can’t win ’em all (which is why we have Rule #1 “If you don’t like it, it’s more for us!”) I do like the other places this dude likes though.

    Xoxo,

    TEAM SK

  • I understand you want to defend the place you work and have so much invested in….but ya know now is your chance to hear the guy out and ask him why he didn’t enjoy is experience or food or both. Part of the business you are in is about always trying to improve and that means listening to people who are familiar and frequent your establishment.
Yeah the dude is a hipster because yeah only annoying hipsters call themselves that but he probably went to SK on more than one occasion. Hopefully you see what i am saying?

@LuxeSmurf Please don’t make assumptions about something you clearly know nothing about. The owners of Starry Kitchen care a great deal about their restaurant and food, and they do listen. But you know what, in the end you really just can’t please everyone, maybe their type of food–really a breakthrough, because you tell me, who else is doing a fusion of Asian cuisines–maybe their type of food is just not comprehended by this dude.

I’ve eaten at Starry Kitchen dozens of times, as I do really enjoy their food. There was an occasion where something was amiss, and it was fixed, pronto.

  • @LuxeSmurf -I don’t just work at SK, but I own it! (considering how broke I am as an owner, I’m not sure I’m ready to brag about that yet though LOL) I hear you LOUD+CLEAR though! Trust that while we DO care, you hafta admit.. that was such a GOOD jab at us how can I not appreciate it. No really, I found it quite funny I even posted it (w/ light humor) on our facebook page. But hopefully Brandon is bored enough to read our comments and banter here to expound if it was- the food, me, service, environment and etc. I (always) would love to know why, but I don’t wanna be too pushy so let’s see. Thanks! :)

@dtgirl -thanks for enjoying our food and caring too! I’m glad to know that people think we care (because we DO!) We do try, and we work hard so hopefully this all pans out.. and maybe.. just MAYBE we’ll convert Brandon one day (Hey, I like hipsters too! ;D)

Already one of the more interesting/successful comment threads I’ve seen on here. Was a decent jab.

Good list of fav. lunch choices, even if it is blasphemy to diss SK.
