PROFILE: L.A. Lunch’er “Cari”

As is customary on Midtown Lunch, every Tuesday we profile a random reader to get their recommendations for the best spots to lunch near their work. This week it’s Cari, a DTLA drinker/jogger whose love all you can eat buffets and shitty Asian food appears to rival my own.

Name: Cari

Age: 21, for the 8th time!

Occupation: Game changer

Where in L.A. do you Work?: Downtown

Favorite Kind of Food: Fried sh*t, carbos, mayonnaise, peanut butter, fruits, salad, raw fishies, and piggies…mostly though I just drink my calories in the form of lovely 100% distilled agave or whiskey.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Anything with rubbery texture (ie: intestines, lengua, stomach, tripes, and steak). I’m lazy and I don’t like to chew that much. Also anything that has a beak still attached. Beaky food es no bueno.

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch: Chirashi matsu from Sushi Go 55 (333 S. Alameda Street), Senor Fish (422 E 1st St) fried shrimp and scallop burrito, Fisherman’s Outlet (529 S Central Ave) fried platter, the DA special platter at Eastside Market and Deli (1013 Alpine St), the chicken with fries at Dino’s Burger in ktown (2575 W Pico Blvd), nengmyun at Yu Chun in ktown (3185 W Olympic Blvd), and cheapo reapo dimsum at Yum Cha Cafe in Chinatown (638 N Broadway).

The “goto” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often? This is not applicable since I work at night but for me prolly eat too often at Oiwake (122 Japanese Village Plaza Mall) for their 8 dolla lunch buffet. Its not very high quality food or anything but when you’re broke, starving, and wanto shove face for mad cheap, it’s clutch.

The farthest place you’ll drive for lunch on a normal day? Maybe ktown. Walking, I would walk like 20 minutes. But I run everywhere downtown (if you see a scrawny asian girl running with a backpack down the street in dt, chances are, it’s me). I’d go a lot further for a drink but for food, probably just 20 minutes.

Dream job location (anywhere in the world), purely for lunch purposes, and why? If it’s purely for food purposes, I like to have mad variety so a Vegas buffet?? Haha I dont know. Ayce anything is pretty much awesome in my book. As long as there are lots of condiments at my disposal. I really like sauce.

Anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch readers? I used to go to high school in New England area and all the little pizza/burger places in that area had this sandwich called a chicken finger sub. Is there anywhere in LA that makes those?? And its different than just sticking a fried chicken patty in a sub…it was so freaking good! Havent seen it anywhere in LA though. Also, why are there no donut shops in downtown? I need apple fritters regularly or I start to wilt.

I know this isn’t exactly what you’re asking for… and Westwood is probably farther than you’re willing to go, but you have to check out Fat Sal’s. You might not be able to tell from the photo but there are chicken fingers buried under that sub (underneath mozzarella sticks, french fries, steak, cheese, bacon and fried eggs.)

Got another suggestion for Cari, put it in the comments. And, as always, if you want to be next week’s Profiled: L.A. Lunch’er (or know somebody you’d want to nominate), email me- zach@midtownlunch.com.
