Hibachi Heaven Truck Debuts Downtown Tuesday

Have you ever thought your life would be complete if there was a truck roaming the streets of NYC serving food cooked on a hibachi? Well, get ready to live (or die?) because a truck called Hibachi Heaven is making its debut on Tuesday in the Financial District somewhere on Water St. The concept seems somewhat similar to one of those Mongolian grills where you choose protein, vegetable and sauce and then it’s all cooked on a hot flat top for you. You can check out the menu after the jump, but it looks pretty simple and thankfully they chose not to fuse the food with anything other than Japanese flavors.

I don’t really know what “yum yum sauce” is, but the rest of the menu is refreshingly normal and I suppose if you get it with brown rice and something other than the wasabi infused mayo you could call it a healthy lunch.

It looks like they’ll be open at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow, and if you hit them up feel free to give us your impressions in the comments. There isn’t information yet on where they’ll be parking each day, but you can check out the ML Downtown Twitter Tracker post every morning to see if they’ll be downtown.

    Variety Cafe has a hibachi?!

  • Andrea they do indeed. Go all the way to the back on the first floor, you have your choice of shrimp, salmon, chicken, beef & pork as well as a variety of raw vegetables and sauces/condiments. The best part of it all is that they cook it with water and not oil which is good for getting my cholesterol under control. You should review it some time :)

  • well seems like authenticity is straight out the window. hibachi is coined by white folks, no japanese would ever use that term.

  • If poorly romanizing/backward-translating the ingredients didn’t raise your eyebrow, then you just might be a weeaboo.

I’m withholding judgment until tasting, but my hopes are not high, especially with the flagrant use of “yum yum sauce.”

  • So not impressed:( Today was their first day out. After waiting 30 mins, I get up to the front and they’re waiting on rice…hmmmm hibachi with no rice. Like you couldn’t cook it ahead and leave it in a steamer? Ok no biggie, I wasn’t looking forward to the rice anyway. I get beef, veggies, and yum yum sauce. They still charge me the same amount even though there’s no rice (and won’t be for about 20-30-mins). The guys were nice…Brooklyn guys….making hibachi. Told me they have a sushi place in Sheepshead Bay. Interesting. Large chunks of hardly seasoned, not very tender steak. Barely cooked large slices of carrots. Broccoli, cabbage, mushrooms and onions were ok. Sauce tasted like less spicy mayo that comes slathered on some sushi. And there wasn’t enough of it. Did I just pay $9 for this? Ugh! I won’t be going back.

  • if u want your hibachi fix trust me on variety cafe…. its 9.99/lb
