East Meets West With Domo Taco’s Rice Bowl
Domo Taco Truck launched last fall and seemed to get off to a choppy start, being spotted in Midtown and then disappearing for a while. Brian tracked them down to try the tacos and nacho tots a couple of months ago, and gave the food an overwhelming “meh.” The truck’s been parking at Water & Broad on Fridays and so I took it upon myself to go try them when I had the chance. Since much of the menu has already been reviewed (and frankly, the picture of those tacos on flour tortillas drowning in crema didn’t do it for me, although it looks like they’re getting better?), I went for the rice bowl ($8). Straight ahead for what you can expect.
The bowl has a lot going on. There’s a layer of white rice, topped with “Asian black beans,” pickled ginger, guacamole, pico de gallo, your choice of protein, and a mound of slaw then topped with crema and hot sauce, if you choose.
I went with the tempura battered fish, although I was tempted by the kare beef which has a peanut sauce. Other choices are vegetables, lemongrass chicken, or pork, the last of which get even more fusion-y as they’re topped with monterey jack cheese.
The fish, while not ice cold as Brian described with his taco, was well on its way to sog city by the time I took a bite, thanks to the slaw, hot sauce and generous application of crema on top. There was also more breading than fish, but that’s to be expected with the nugget sized pieces. I wish that the slaw was not put directly on top of the fish, but off to the side like the other components were.
And what about those sides? Well, they can only be described as bland. The guac, beans and pico weren’t bad when mixed together but on their own had little flavor. I can’t say they were bad, but when I compare this to the rice platter from Big D’s Grub Truck (which also fuses Asian food – Korean – with Mexican), I thought theirs was a lot better although $1 more expensive.
It does look like they’ve gotten better with the tacos, but I thought the rice bowl was just OK. Have any of the rest of you eaten at this truck? Thoughts?
