Sampling The Mexican Side Of San Luis Taco Truck’s Menu

A couple of months ago the San Luis Taco truck (formerly called Tacos Mexicanos) rolled into the Financial District, filling a void with its Mexican and Ecuadorian food. They’ve bounced around in different spots since then but seem to have settled on parking on Front St. which is good because I think often fans of their food didn’t know where the hell they were from day to day. After my first taste of the truck’s hornado, I decided to return for something from the Mexican side of the menu and discovered that it was hard to choose when you have so many delicious options at your disposal

While a torta sounded good I went with a trio of tacos ($2.50 each) and a tamale ($2). They also have beef empanadas for $1.50 but I knew my stomach wouldn’t be big enough for that much carby deliciousness. On recommendation I got a pastor taco (pork, pineapple), carnitas (spicy pork) and one with chicken. My favorites were the carnitas and chicken as the pork in the pastor didn’t really have seasoning so it mostly tasted of pineapple.

All of the tacos looked the same from above with shredded iceberg, cilantro and some guacamole that you don’t have to pay extra for. There was a lot of meat in each of them, and I really liked the tortillas which weren’t griddled which often makes them split, but instead steamed meaning they held up well being transported in their styrofoam vessel. They gave me two containers of hot sauce and one of green sauce on the side which really helped the flavor of the chicken and pastor tacos.

I clearly hadn’t eaten enough pork encased in corn-based products so I got a tamale with red sauce. I’d have to say this wasn’t the best version I’ve ever had but the pork that was in there was good. My main complaint was that I couldn’t taste the red sauce, but for $2 it gets the job done and it was really nothing that some added hot or green sauce couldn’t fix.

I was happy to see a steady stream of people coming to the truck while I waited for my food. Now that they’ve settled on a permanent spot, it’s easier to get your taco or Ecuadorian fix.

San Luis Taco truck, Front St. often near Pine, but check their location on Twitter before heading out.

I see they have a fairly prominent sign saying “Vegetarian Food.” Can you tell me what the options were?

A guy who ordered after me got them to make him a vegetarian quesadilla with all kinds of stuff in it. They seem pretty willing to throw together whatever you want.

i asked them about the vegetarian options a few months ago. at that point it was tacos with rice and pinto beans. they were pretty good. they might have more options now.
