Fancy New Duane Reade Gets Into The (Terrifying) Lunch Game

Yesterday I read about the huge and fancy new Duane Reade opening on Wall St. right above Milk St. Cafe and when I walked by the store was having its grand opening. The chain’s renovated locations have already gotten into convenience food, selling sandwiches, sushi and in some cases Korean food. While this was horrifying enough I was not prepared for the food within this new version. There are expanded aisles of snack foods, frozen foods and ridiculously-priced produce that we’ve all seen before. But then in the back there ‘s the “Up Market” area (right next to the pharmacy, of course!) where a guy makes sushi, there’s a juice bar, and you can buy a baguette from a wicker basket.

Surrounding the sushi counter there’s a scary selection including sandwiches, panini, shrimp cocktail (!), chicken kebabs and Carnegie deli corned beef, all of it overpriced.

While I would like to think anyone reading this site would not be caught dead getting lunch from Duane Reade, know that if you do there’s also a doctor on duty.
