Back to Marabella for Chicken & Veggie Meatballs, with an Alcoholic Bread Pudding Ball for Dessert

I heard that Marabella was serving Turkey meatballs this week, a special not on the regular menu. I had enjoyed the cheese covered beef and pork meatballs there, and I am curious to see how the turkey meatballs were since I have had much experienced with them being often dried out. Alas when I got there, they were out. But I was still hungry. I had never tried the chicken or veggie meatballs, and I had recently read good things about them. I also found out on this trip that you can do combo sandwiches, why did I not think of that before. I ordered the traditional with 2 chicken and 2 veggie balls ($8.50).

Jewish Style Corned Beef Fits the Bill for St Patty’s Day

Unforutnately St. Patty’s Day is not really recognized by employers. Taking a leisurly corned beef, cabbage, and potatoes kind of lunch may really be out of the question. But that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate a little bit, just be creative.  How about a Jewish deli style sandwich from Hershel’s in Reading Terminal. It is served up quickly, so why not get a little wild with it and bring it to the Beer Garden inside the Terminal for something celebratory to wash it down?

Cafe 12 is Selling Sandwiches with your Coffee, Go FIGure which one I enjoyed

A little while back the Gayborhood coffee shop Brew-ha-ha turned into Cafe 12. While the drink menu looks about the same, (expensive hot coffee drinks, check! expensive cold coffee drinks, check!) a list of sandwiches was added. That is surely  an improvement. Each of the six sandwiches are $7.25 and are put together to order.

An Amish Meat Sandwich Experiment: Smucker’s Pot Roast Sandwich vs The Rib Stand’s Boneless Rib Sandwich

While in Reading Terminal over the summer I was tempted by the sound of the boneless rib sandwich at one of the smaller Amish joints- The Rib Stand. I happily discovered that this sandwich is awesome, with perfectly cooked and flavorful meat. And no bones to get in the way.

So while in a similar state of Reading Terminal wandering, I passed Smucker’s and decided to stop because of a large sign advertising a pot roast sandwich. I instantly thought back to that boneless sandwich and wondered how this could compare. Maybe this could be a new favorite?

Le Pain Quotidien’s Take Out Baguettes are not too hard on the wallet, but a little hard on the teeth

Today Morgan is reporting on the semi- fancy, semi- chain, Le Pain Quotidien, the name of which I could not pronounce even with a gun pointed to my head.

The first PA location of Le Pain Quotidien opened in Philadelphia on January 19th. Think classy, organic Cosi with a liquor license (eventually). You can be seated and served by a waiter, or order food, pastries, and beverages to go.

Truthfully, I was a little hesitant about trying out LPQ. I checked out the online menu of soups, salads, and open-faced sandwiches and only counted 7 selections under $10 for lunch. Of these, none really appealed to me. I was pleasantly surprised, though, when I actually arrived at the restaurant. There were way more selections within the Midtown Lunch price range than the menu let on. There was a cold case of prepared sandwiches and salads (all <$10). A menu next to this case listed all their to-go selections which included several more items under $10. Also, a black board on the wall listed the current selection of take-out baguette sandwiches and these were just $7.50 a piece. That seemed to be the way to go.

Classic Pastrami at Schlesinger’s, But did they Keep the Pickle Bar?

In December, The Kibbitz Room changed owners and became Schlesinger’s. Luckily, Center City did not lose out on a Jewish style deli, the general gist of the restaurant has been maintained. But the hours of been expanded and the menu has grown a bit.

I stopped by to check out the quality of the deli sandwiches. But the question on my mind was a serious one, what became of the briny heaven that I loved about Kibbitz Room, what happened to the pickle bar?

Pick Two at Cooperage, Make One the Short Rib Sandwich

Last April, Cooperage opened inside the Curtis Center. I had never been inside the impressive Curtis Center before, but choosing the wrong entrance allowed me to look around. The Cooperage has a disjointed, cowboy decor that at the very least, gives your eyes different things to focus on, whether it be the disco mirror wall panels or the wood chandeliers. For lunch, sandwiches, soups, and salads are on the agenda with a pick 2 option for $10.  Whenever given the choice of sticking to one thing, or picking the combo- I am going to go for the combo. All of the lunch menu was available for the pick two except the burger and the crabcake, since  a half version of those would look pretty weird. I had to look no further than the first sandwich listed on my clipboard menu- short ribs!
