Top Lunches of 2014

A pre New Year round up of my favorites bites is a fun excuse to look back on each year of dining. It is also incentive to get down and hold the plank position until the ball drops.  Here are my 2014 eating highlights:

During my first overseas trip of the  year, I ate my way through Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai!

Soon after, I started giving Chinatown Food Tours! (if you still owe someone a belated Holiday gift, its not a bad idea!)

I wrote a few fun articles for Zagat, including one on shopping at “ethnic” markets.

On an outing to Graffiti Pier in Port Richmond, I put together a Polish picnic that you can replicate.

For my birthday, we celebrated with beer and a Puerto Rican Pork feast.

I coordinated a food truck festival for 15,000 people in Mt. Airy.

On a solo vacation in Mexico City, I ate a ton of street meat.

I was really proud of my Federal Donuts costume this Halloween.

Way more, after the jump…

BrazBQ Brings Brazilian Flavors on Wheels

Today Luncher John is checking out the only Brazilian food truck in town

Think of Brazil and what comes to mind: warm beaches, world class soccer, festive celebrations, barbecue. Don’t feel like traveling all the way to the Southern Hemisphere (or shelling out over $50 at one of the city’s Brazilian steakhouses) for the experience? Have no fear, as the BrazBQ food truck brings a little bit of Brazil to the streets of Philadelphia.

Pie Stand Chicken Pot Hand Pie

I like to stay current on all the popular food trucks in Philly. Its all part of being a good Midtown Luncher. When I found out that Pie Stand won this year’s Vendy Awards, I needed to get my hands on those hand pies, especially the savory ones.

I was able to catch them at an event in Center City. The truck is adorable- very Grandma’s farmhouse kitchen, which is perfect. My order took a fairly long time to be ready, especially considering there was no one waiting ahead of me. But, when I looked in the little window, I realized everything is made to order- the filling is spooned into the dough and fried on the spot.

Mt. Airy USA Street Fare

It’s been a crazy week, guys!  Yesterday was the Mt. Airy Street Fare, something I have been working on for the past few months. We saw a crowd of about 15,000 folks who ate from any of the 50 food trucks. Along the way, I got to sample from many of these food trucks. What a rough job.

Some highlights:

Potato and cheese pierogies and stuffed cabbage from Mommom’s.  Fish tacos from Just Jackie’s. Cheesesteak on a pretzel roll from Pbon’s. Not to mention all the sweets: layered strawberry champagne cake from Wonderland’s, pineapple basil pops from Mompops,  pumpkin chocolate chip cupcakes from Sweetbox, and burnt sugar apple ice cream from Weckerly’s

Time to detox.

Try the Fried Cutlets from the Flying Deutschman Food Truck

Standing in front of the giant food truck painted like a pirate ship and called the Flying Deutschman, you might not guess what exactly it is that the serve. But printed menus, just like a restaurant, show a German menu equipped with fried cutlets and wursts.

Kale Flecked Lobster Rolls from the Surf and Turf Truck

Like the Foolish Waffles truck, I stalked the Surf and Turf truck to finally find a location that worked for me. This truck has a small menu with a few novel takes on the lobster, plus steak or other seafood sandwiches, depending on the day.
