Far From Home Closes Thursday, Meaning 3 Days Left To Enjoy Truck Empanadas

Yesterday on Twitter, Far From Home Cafe, the burger & empanada truck in Love Park, announced this would be their last week of serving food in Philly. With under a year of serving food to our city, the people behind the truck are moving on to book deals and consulting opportunities. They are looking for someone to buy their truck, so hopefully the empanadas will still be available. Note to whoever buys it: Keep selling empanadas or else!

I am ashamed to admit that it was news of the closing that brought me to Far From Home Cafe. Every time I pass by Love Park, the lines just seemed too long to deal with. The thought of never getting to try out their empanadas was enough to force me to wait it out.

Philly Vendy Awards Recap: What the Judges Ate

This Saturday at the Piazza at Schmidts was the 1st Vendy Awards in Philadelphia, a “street food showcase and intense cook-off between the best sidewalks chefs in Philly.” Tickets were completely sold out and the vibe was sweaty but happy. I was privileged enough to  be one of the judges who sampled the  offerings of all 8 trucks and voted to pick the winner of the Vendy Cup.  While I admit that coverage of events after the fact can be lame and not helpful at all, the venders here all provided food you could normally expect at their trucks, so reading ahead will not only let you recap the event if you attended or let you live vicariously through the pictures if you missed out, it can also give you a preview of what you could get at any of these trucks on a given day.

New Food Truck Alert?

Well this is exciting! Through twitter I just learned of a new food truck coming to Philly, Latin Farmer,  “a sustainable, local and responsible approach to Latin food”. Follow them on twitter or check out there website, which is pretty sparse for now, but should have more details as the project works out. I hope they put their menu up soon, I am dying to know what they will be feeding me.

Korean Cheesesteak is a Great Idea

Back in September, Nick raved about the bulgogi platter at the Koja truck. On a return trip I wanted something less plattery, more portable, and as cheap as possible. My eyes immediately went to the cheapest meal on the menu- a $3 bulgogi cheesesteak. Same great meat, lower price, portable, perfect. Was this going to be kid sized though?

I May Be Bad, But I’m Perfectly Good At It: My Mozz Stick Topped Burger From Munchies

One year ago, Munchies opened on the Temple Campus to deliver late night food to hungry college students. Now, they still deliver, or you can pick up from their home base- a trailer on Norris Street. Looking at the online menu of college munchie inspired burger and chicken sandwiches (all $5-7), like the Natural Disaster with steak, chicken, fries, cheez whiz, more cheese, and fried onion,  I felt inspired to be bad.  I decided to BYO- build my own (they call it that, I didn’t make it up).

Guapos Tacos for Lunch

In early March Garces’ Guapos Tacos truck made its debut, hitting the streets all over Philly for dinner and late night. Today marks the first day they are serving lunch during the work week. They will be at LOVE park today (and tomorrow) at 11:00, and judging by the lines that can accumulate,  I suggest getting there early or bringing a crossword puzzle to work on. I was able to try some of the tacos as a late night snack, but the menu is the same no matter what time of day.

Whose Chicken, Grandpa or the General?

Yue Kee is a popular Chinese food truck in University City. The menu is super long, and the line of people made me want to chose quickly. General Tso’s Chicken? No. How about Grandfather’s chicken.
