Dough Wrapped Meat at Barra

This week, Luncher Janeane from Phillyism is trying the savory dough treats at Barra.

I’ve walked past Barra plenty of times, but decided to finally check it out when I heard about their lunch menu. That, and the fact that they bake stomboli-esque burgers and sandwiches. Scoreee!

Barra opened a few months back in the Old City venue that once housed the Paradigm / Dolce mashup. A brick oven and remodeled space boasts a warm ambiance, perfect for a lunch visit on a cool day. With a full menu priced at $$$, their lunch menu is definitely the way to go with burgers and sandwiches between $9-$13 that includes either a side salad or fries. Cue the food pics.

Found the SPOT for Amazing Burgers and Sandwiches

Today Luncher John gets a gourmet truck burger and LOBSTER ROLLS.

Since the SPOT food cart started serving near Drexel’s campus a few months ago, the word on the street (literally) was that it was cooking up some remarkably tasty burgers and other sandwiches. Having heard the rave reviews, I figured it was worth a trip to University City to check out SPOT’s offerings. Needless to say, all the stories were “spot” on.

Despite its bright yellow color, SPOT, can be easy to miss if for no other reason that its physical size. It’s a small cart that really only fits one person (which would be Josh, the proprietor/cook). SPOT is parked near the corner of 33rd and Arch (with a stint at the Porch at 30th Street every Wednesday through the end of September), but I walked right by it on the first visit. I should have been clued in immediately by the wonderful aroma of beef and pork on the grill.

Shake Shack, Shack Stack

Last week Shake Shack, the widely popular burger joint from New York City, opened in Center City. I braved the 40 minute sweaty wait in order to experience an old favorite of mine from my days living in NYC- the Shack Stack. Shake Shack has a very special place in my heart; before I had my first Shake Shack burger about 5 years ago, I didn’t actually ever eat hamburgers. Shake Shack’s patty converted me. That’s big time.

Happy Monday All! Today I hand in the last assignment of my law school career. Also, my wrist is healing (though I still can’t open a bottle of wine). So, tomorrow we will finally be back to our regularly scheduled programming.  In the meantime, how about this deal?

For the month of May (National Hamburger Month), The Palm (located in The Bellevue) is offering coupons for $8.37  burger and fries every Monday during lunch time. This even includes the 837 Club Burger that comes with  prosciutto di Parma, roasted red peppers, pesto aioli and fontina cheese.

The Capital Grille Launches Their “Plates” Lunch This Week, Including Lobster Rolls Under $20

This week I was invited by The Capital Grille to try out their new $18 plates menu. Spoiler: the lobster roll was a good enough value that it was worth sharing despite the over $10 price tag.

The new $18 lunch at Capital Grille offers an entree with a side and a soup or salad. You still get the same Capital Grille experience, complete with crumber bearing waiters and portraits of mustachioed gentleman. Each course was brought out quickly; The Grille could easily keep its promise of getting you in and out in under 45 minutes if you ask.
