If Only Life Was All Cheese & Biscuits: Lunch at Bourbon and Branch
About 2 years ago, Bourbon and Branch opened in Northern Liberties with live music most evenings upstairs and a Southern influenced menu downstairs. I was invited to check out their recently updated menu.
The menu is a little erratic, with things like spicy tuna nachos on fried tortillas and oxtail fries joining the fried chicken and shrimp and grits. Pretending to contemplate other healthier options, bacon and beer mac ($7) was the starter we decided on. It was always you, mac&cheese.

B&B’s m&c showcased classic macaroni and copious amounts of liquefied cheese. Share this, don’t be a pig.
I knew that B&B served biscuits for brunch, but I like biscuits at all times. Luckily, biscuits are available for lunch and dinner time consumption. The fried chicken, biscuit, and gravy ($12) was a duh, featuring flaky biscuit, well seasoned chicken breast, and a peppery white gravy
Much to my dismay, I do realize that life can’t just be all cheese and biscuits. So we ordered a kale salad ($10), which was huge and came with avocado, croutons, and just the right amount of dressing. I was glad I had something green in my meal, but it could have used another element, something sweet like cranberries.
THE + (What somebody who likes this place would say)
- Gooey mac and cheese & fried chicken biscuits
- Solid draft list
- Pleasant old timey ambiance
THE – (What somebody who doesn’t like this place would say)
- Hard to not order high calorie plates
