The 2008 Vendy Awards are Here!

vendys08

The date is set, and tickets are on sale, for the biggest food event of the year… the 2008 Vendy Awards.  It’s a street cart battle of epic proportions, and it all goes down October 18th at Tobacco Warehouse in Dumbo.  Tickets are more expensive this year ($80 in advance/$100 at the door) but all the money goes to The Street Vendor Project, a great organization that fights for the legal rights of vendors all over the city.  There are also donor packages available, with added perks, if your company would like to get involved.

Tickets are on sale now, and nominations are officially open- so head over to their website and represent for Midtown!  Last year Kwik Meal won the fan’s choice award, but this year I want Midtown to take home the whole thing! (There are fancy shirts for sale as well… very exciting.) The nominations close on September 7th, so don’t wait!

Dosa Man Wins but Kwik Meal is the People’s Choice at the 2007 Vendy Awards

The Dosa Man’s Entry, Posted to Flickr by 52 Projects

The third time was a charm, as Kumar “The Dosa Man” from Washington Sq. Park finally took home the top prize at the Third Annual Vendy Awards this past weekend in Tompkins Sq. Park.  Midtown can still hold it’s head up high as the Kwik Meal Cart not only got judge Ed Levine’s vote (you can read his take on the event here), but also won the People’s Choice voting.

JUST IN: 2007 Vendy Award Finalists Announced!

The official announcement is coming on Monday morning- but for you…

And the nominees are:

  • NY Dosas (W. 4th St. & Sullivan, Washing Sq. Park)
  • Kwik Meal (6th Ave. & 45th St., Midtown)
  • Super Tacos (96th & Broadway, Manhattan)
  • King Falafel & Schwarma (30th & Broadway, Queens)
  • Veronica’s Kitchen (Front St. & Pine, Downtown)

I thought for sure this was going to be the year of the Jamaican Dutchy… but it’s ok.  Midtown is very well represented by Muhammed Rahman and the Kwik Meal Cart, who we profiled a few weeks ago.

2007 Vendy Awards Tix on Sale Now!

It’s that time of year again!  The date for the 3rd Annual Vendy Awards has been set, and a new website has just gone live, where you can buy tickets and nominate your favorite Street Cart.  The first year, Midtown represented as the Halo Berlin Cart took top honors.  Last year, we didn’t even have a nominee.  It’s time to bring the Silver Vendy Cup back to Midtown!

This year’s event will be held on Saturday, September 29th from 3-8pm and tickets cost $60 in advance.  It has sold out the past two years, so if you want to attend, get your tickets early.  All proceeds benefit the Street Vendor Project, a non-profit organization that works to help protect all street vendors from social and economic injustices.

To get more info about the event, buy your tickets or nominate your favorite street cart, go to http://www.streetvendor.org/vendies.html.  Nominees will be announced on September 1st.
