Test Driving Mexicue’s Brand New Midtown Take Out Counter

Upon hearing of Mexicue’s plans to bring a new location around the corner from my office, it didn’t take long for the excitement to grow. A lunch place that blends together Mexican and BBQ, how could that possibly go wrong? I started browsing their menu, planning my attack, months before it ever opened. I know they have a truck, and a location further downtown, but I wanted my first Mexicue experience to be at this location. So finally, after weeks of checking their social media accounts, and one failed attempt early last week, I finally got to give Mexicue a try.

Flatiron Lunch: A Milanes Revisit Pays Off

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

Passing by Milanes always ignited jealously that Clay got there first. But I knew this gem would need a repeat visit.

Academia Barilla’s Grab & Go Is Really Not That Terrible

After the reader reaction to the last post about this place, I was really wary about posting my experience. But you know what I say? Bring on the heat: I’m here to report on what I eat, and you can disagree – after you’ve tried it for yourself and determined that I’m totally out of my head wrong.

Papaya King Goes Mobile Today, Bringing Hot Dogs to Midtown

You read that right! That old New York institution, Papaya King, has gone mobile. The official launch is today June 25 at 52nd Street and 6th Avenue, and to celebrate they will be selling hot dogs with all the toppings for $3, and plain dogs with sauerkraut will be $1 from 2-3pm. If you can’t make it out today, they’ll be in Midtown all week long (55th & B’way on Thursday, and then 52nd & 6th on Friday.)

Follow @PapayaKingTruck to find their exact location daily!

Free Cheese + Art At Grand Central Starting Today: An edible art gallery—made of cheese—can be found on the west side of Grand Central's Vanderbilt Hall this Thursday and Friday. The pop-up gallery is sponsored by cheese maker Castello, and the best part of the whole thing is you can take samples straight from the "art." If you think it's weird to eat cheese/art, they'll also be handing out samples of aged havarti, and you can watch a couple of artists carve a sculpture out of cheese. This is happening from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday so if you're a true freeloader you can get samples for all three meals.

Free Ice Cream Alert: If you're a fan of the Mets and/or free ice cream you'll want to hit up the plaza in front of SNY Studios (on 51st & 6th) today from Noon to 2pm. Good Humor will be celebrating summer by giving away thousands of frozen treats along with Mr. & Mrs. Met.  Freeloaders, prepare to engage.

At Lunch Now: Mexicue is Now Open!

We got word this morning via twitter that the long awaited Mexicue brick and mortar is now open, so naturally I headed down to check it out.  Place was a bit of a disaster today (naturally) with long lines and by 2pm they were out of a lot of food- including rice, which meant no burritos. If you were expecting a take out place, you might be disappointed.  It’s actually all about seated dining, with a lot of tables and a big bar. There is a to-go area, but it seems a little small for the amount of traffic I presume they will get.  Either way, we’re excited they’re finally open.  I’ll be back again tomorrow… a little earlier, of course.  Early adopters, let us know what you think in the comments.

Mexicue, 1440 Broadway (40th btw Broadway & 6th Ave)

Freddy is Still the King of Falafel (And His Kofta isn’t Bad Either)

Even though I live in Queens and multiple people have raved about Freddy’s to me, I never went. Why? Because it takes two subways for me to get there. Now that I work in Midtown, I can just walk over and boom.

Flatiron Lunch: Cafe el Presidente

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

In May, Cafe el Presidente opened what looked to be an mini version of Eataly but with Mexican food. Over the past two months they have been rolling open the different components with take out still to come on or around July 1.
