Midtown Lunch

 Carina’s Tea and Waffles is a new cafe located in UPenn’s International House, though you can access it through a separate outdoor entrance up a set of stairs to the left of the International House. As the name suggests, you will find many  iterations of tea and Belgian style waffles inside.

 Since tea is taken so seriously here, I wasn’t surprised by how much I enjoyed my iced herbal tea. I devoured my honey matcha waffle that came with  strawberries, whipped cream, cookie bites, and green tea ice cream. I love when sweet things are paired with the bitter, fresh taste of green tea. The honey, fresh berries, and crispy cookie pieces were thoughtful additions. The liege style waffle was thick and soft inside, and slightly crispy on the outside. It wasn’t huge, but I was full when I finished the plate.

My friend’s red bean waffle was a little heavier and not to my taste.

If you aren’t craving something sweet, you will have little use for Carina’s. But if you seek to jump on the waffle  wagon in University City, this cleanly spot for creative waffles will conquer your craving.
