Break Your Resolutions with Resurrection Ale House’s Fried Chicken

I hate feeling like an idiot when there is a food I hear all the good things about and it takes me forever to get after it. Such was the case with the twice fried chicken from Resurrection Ale House. As it was taken off the menu for a bit, its scarcity only intensified its cult status. But it is now available daily for lunch and dinner.

Beyond the chicken, Resurrection does the ubiquitous good beer and gastropub food thing that makes me proud to be a Philly resident. Located all the way west, on Gray’s Ferry, it has a cozy, neighborhood bar feel.

I would have included a picture of the escargot appetizer I had, but the photo legitimately came out looking like cat craps in a litter box, so it has been omitted. It was a generous portion of lovely tastings snails though.

The chicken ($16) is one of the few large plates on the menu. You get your two pieces of fried chicken and a pile of tangy white bean and potato salad on a plate covered in honey. The white beans were shockingly good. I am inspired to add way more sugar to my own bean salads now. The chicken skin shatters pleasantly when you bite in to it; the meat inside is moist and tastes like a high quality chicken. The equally quality honey on the bottom works well with the chicken’s seasoning. The fry job is clean and doesn’t make you feel gross after. It lives up to the hype. Don’t be a sheep, instead of going to the gym and eating salad, have a beer and fried chicken to start the year off right.
