Whoa, those are sea beans in Cheu’s ramen?! I need to get there, immediately!

Just for the sea beans. I wish somebody around here carried them. I used to find them in farmers’ markets out in Oakland and Portland, but haven’t seen any back here yet. Not even in RTM. I would think someone in Delaware or Maryland is collecting them. Bring ’em on up to Philly, people!

  • what do they taste like?

They’re very salty and a little crunchy, with maybe somewhat of a very subtle-ish, spinach-meets-green beans taste to them. They’re also known as sea asparagus, but I think that’s just for its appearance. I never tasted any asparagus in them, though some people do claim to.

They’re great to snack on (I used to buy them in brown paper lunch bags from the farmers’ markets out west, and snack on half of them right on the bus ride home!). They also went great raw in salads, or cooked with eggs. I’ve never tried them in a soup, but I am very intrigued.

Mostly I just wanna know where they get them. They only last a couple days at best, but they showed up in Portland (70 miles inland) often during their season/s (I think there’s a Spring and a Fall season for them, if I recall), and I’m sure they definitely grow somewhere along the NJ, DE or MD coasts…

  • I just realized I DO know what they are. I have foraged them. Do not love them raw, too briney. Haven’t tried cooking them though.
