Liberty Chicken at The Bourse

I was at Quizzo last week and a question came up about a food court in Old City with the same name as the stock exchange in Paris. My team looked at me, assuming my knowledge of local eating spots would get us the right answer. Instead, I had no clue. How embarrassing. But, that was how I learned that The Bourse is a thing.

Located between on the block between Market and Chestnut, with entrances on 5th and 4th street,  The Bourse has candy stores, tourist shops, and a few places to grab food. Although I may not have known about it, the tourists certainly seem to, as there were many groups of small, sweaty children with name tags guided by chaperones in jean shorts.

When I walked in, I saw some really attractive chicken behind a glass at the station marked “CHICKEN”. A small printed sign informed me that Liberty Chicken makes the best chicken fingers around and that somehow they are good for me too. I chose to believe this sign since it seems like a popular spot. there was a line, but it moved along quickly.

There were several lunch combos with rotisserie and  Thai style chicken, as well as the chicken fingers. Sides include sauteed veggies, salad, rice, and even quinoa on special. To test it out, I just went with 3 fingers with a side of honey mustard sauce ($3.50).  The large chicken tenders, made of clean looking white meat, were very moist moist inside. I enjoyed the breading, it wasn’t greasy. Liberty’s chicken fingers are refined enough that I didn’t feel like a 6 year old while eating them, more like a 9 year old, which I think is quite impressive for a touristy food court spot.

THE + (What somebody who likes this place would say)

  •  Big and tasty chicken fingers

THE – (What somebody who doesn’t like this place would say)

  • I hate being surrounded by sneaker-clad tourists

  • When I go to the Bourse (3 times/yr), I check out “Mexico” which is actually Tijuana Taco Too. They make delicious tamales and tortas. They’ve been around for a while and with the Mexican consulate on the 2nd floor, I consider their standards to be pretty high. I might even go as far to say that this is the best Center City Mexican restaurant in the inexpensive category.

Pro Tip(s): The Bourse has great public restrooms. Also, the coldest water fountain in town to fill your canteen from. Both on the lower floor, easily accesible from the 4th Street (rear) entrance.

I have never eaten from any place there, though I will admit to having borrowed a table there in order to enjoy at least one chicken gyro from the halal cart on the NW corner of 4th & Market. Nobody kicked me out, or even noticed. Just like how I’ve been known to take my lamb & rice from the halal cart at 8th & Market down into the Gallery’s food cart in the same manner.

You learn a thing or three being broke, yet still trying to eat sitting down. ;)

  • tor- YES I did check the Mexican place and will post about it soon!

Jay- surprised to hear they can keep the bathrooms clean with all the stinky tourists coming in and out!

Jay – I gave up on eating my lunch in the Gallery after one day when THREE homeless people accosted me for money in the space of 15 minutes. Until Security steps up their game I’m taking my food to the Terminal.
