A Proper English Lunch at The Victoria Freehouse

The Victoria Freehouse opened a few months ago in Old City, as far east as you can go. The place serves British pub food, though it is  “freehouse” and not a pub, get it right!

Welsh rarebit, from the “starters” section, is one of those things I have wanted to try for a long time but never see on a menu. . Just as I imagined it, we received a slice of thick bread with a salty, cheesy, browned sauce on top. Leave it to the British to make bread with cheese sauce on it a refined thing with a dapper name

What is a British lunch without fish and chips? They batter up cod here. Its flaky, crispy, and fresh, all the good things you want in your pub fish. The portion of fish was small for $12. The fries, which got a little soggy, helped make the dish filling.  Do not forget to ask for the homemade tartar sauce- they only bring it if you ask.

Instead of a dessert menu, the Freehouse has a pudding menu. My dining companion of the day, Helena, the Mistress of the Vendy Awards has a sticky toffee pudding obsession. Sticky toffee pudding ($7) it was. It came on pool of toffee (the best part). and topped with frosting that Helena thought was excessive, though excess and dessert go together like Forest and Jenny.
