Chhaya Cafe’s Sausage Gravy Waffles
Chhaya Cafe is a small, relaxing spot to get coffee and light eats on East Passyunk. There are just a few things on the menu that are more robust than light, hence my visit. Fresh waffles are one of Chhaya’s signature plates; most come with fruit or other sweet fixings. There is a vegan chili waffle on the menu as well, but just one of the waffles involves meat- easy decision.
The sausage gravy and cornbread waffle is $8. Don’t expect any garnish, just a plate full of gravy smothered waffle. The warm waffle itself was a subtle base to hold the meaty gravy. It was salty, creamy, and comforting which kept me picking at it long after I was full, but a little spice or fresh herbs would have elevated the whole thing a little bit.
I believe Chhaya does rotating food specials, sometimes offering an additional savory, but I would love to see a few more permanent savory waffles to choose from.

Seems you can add a fried egg to this one, too. I’m not quite sure what I think of that, but it sounds good!
I have seven words for them – smoked salmon and dill cream cheese waffle.
