    “great Philly Bugers.”

    (juvenile laughter…)

    ;)

I love 500 Degrees. It’s also the only burger I’ve had on that list, though a meal at LOS will occur imminently. Possibly even Sunday at Headhouse. I wish there was a great roadside stand-style burger in the city, at least one closer than Charlie’s. I like Shake Shack well enough, but I’d also like something a little more White Manna-ish and a little less “famous NYC burger chain-ish,” if you know what I mean.

I’ve gotta check out that banh mi at 33rd & Arch one day, too. And Spot’s sloppy joe. I had a Taylor’s Maid-Rite for the first time somewhere in Iowa last March, and was slightly disappointed. I could definitely use a good ‘loose meat’ sandwich one of these days again, though.

  • oops fixed. What is a Maid Rite?

Maid Rite is a ‘loose meat sandwich,’ also known as a tavern sandwich. It’s essentially a crumbled hamburger, or a sloppy joe without the tomato sauce, and is a regional favorite in parts of the Midwest. Mainly around Iowa, I believe.

I’m not from the Midwest (I’m a North Jerseyan), but I have a fascination with regional specialties like that, and I’m determined to… collect them all one day! Heh.

Taylor’s is the somewhat ‘famous’ chain (and it also has a reputation for its awesome mid-century small-town diner architecture like this), but the sandwiches are common in bars and pubs in the region, as well.

This requires a correction. Maid Rite is the franchise, Taylor’s is just one specific ‘famous’ location of it. I did not eat at Taylor’s, but rather at a generic Maid Rite somewhere near Davenport.

I believe I have it straight now!

And I still want to try Spot’s sloppy joe soon!
