Wiener Wednesdays: The Dos Segundos Mexican Hot Dog

First John went to Underdogs, then I went to Maui’s Dog House. This week, for Wiener Wednesdays it is a hot dog special in Northern Liberties.

Unlike Underdogs or Maui’s, Cantina Dos Segundos specializes not in hot dogs, but in Mexican food. On special, however, is the Mexican hot dog. I had heard good things, and needed to try it for myself.

The Mexican hot dog ($4) is topped with cotija cheese, tomatoes, a bit of mayo, and jalapenos. The shards of cotija melt as they hit your tongue; a unique pairing for a hot dog, and it works.  I actually hate the taste of jalapenos in food, but love them in drinks, so I promptly tossed the scattering into my margarita. I had read that the dog is wrapped in bacon, but mine wasn’t… sad face.  And yea, $4 is a bit more than a street dog costs, but I ate enough complimentary chips and salsa to make up for it. What made this hot dog more satisfying than Maui’s was that it was crispy! Isn’t that what we all really want in a hot dog- that burnt, nostalgic campfire flavor? Bacon or no bacon, I was happy it was on the menu for me to devour. And it was the perfect match for my modified spicy jalapeno margarita.
