Wah Gi Wah’s Pakistani Fried Chicken
Chicken Chargha, aka Pakistani Fried Chicken, is the reason that LeBan and other’s come to Wah-Gi-Wah. I had to get in on this unique chicken preparation. Unlike other fried chicken places in the city who run out early, only serve one day a week, or periodically take it off the menu- you will be able to get your chicken fix here from 11am until 11pm. I find that comforting.
The glistening naan came out hot, asking to be ripped apart.
The whole chicken on your table is quite the visual. While it wasn’t super duper crispy, the skin was excellent. I guess my mind associates fried chicken with fried and battered chicken, while this is just fried. I like how different this fried chicken was seasoned compared to traditional versions, with the powerful masala, chili, and cumin flavors. Wah-Gi-Wah doesn’t even ‘chargah’ very much for it’s signature entree; a half chicken is $7, and would certainly be a great lunch. You are better off bringing a friend and sharing the whole chicken for $12. There is something satisfying about looking at the carcass of the chicken you just decimated. It makes you want to high five your lunch companion for the team effort.
I have tried a few varieties of naan, but never meat stuffed. The entirety of the Keema naan ($3) is filled with one big patty of meat. If you are the kind of person who gets uncomfortable by the amount of ground meat in a meatloaf, you might want to avoid this. I was also put off at how pink the meat itself was. But the flavor of the thing was more agreeable.
Wah-Gi-Wah is all about the flattened meat. The beef kebob was less keboby than expected, and more like a strongly seasoned Pakistani hamburger.
Rice pudding is a good way to end the meal. They give you a generous serving of it and flavor it with rose water. It is a good way to cleanse the palate after a meal with so many bold flavors.
THE + (What somebody who likes this place would say)
- I want to try a totally new type of chicken preperation
- No worrying whether the chicken will be available when you want it
THE – (What somebody who doesn’t like this place would say)
- The ground meat patties might not appeal to all
