French Onion Soup Dumplings at Continental

Starr’s Continental Midtown isn’t generally my type of lunch scene. Most of the “tapas” style menu that would fall in the ML sub $10 price range are not quite big enough or fun enough. But…there was a certain something that I had to try there.

First I digressed with the Szechuan shoe string fries, which are shareworthy, but you certainly aren’t going to make a meal out of them. These glorified potato sticks are piled impressively high and supplied with a spicy mustard dressing. Tip: During happy hour, the shoe strings are half off.

I am fairly certain that Continental was not the first to think up french onion soup dumplings, but I won’t hold that against them.

Here is a list of things that I like: soup, onions, dumplings, soup dumplings, french onion soup. Continental would have to screw up pretty bad for me not to like this. They are served in the cut out crocks you might find escargot in. They were less dumplings, and more spheres of caramelized onions surrounded by cheese.  Like the $9 price tag, eating the best part of french onion soup is decadent.
