What is a Pinolshake? (Gluten Free, Healthy Product Alert)
Biking around the Italian Market, I spotted a stand with two men selling something other than the usual random kitchen supplies or cheap produce you normally find in the market. When I checked it out, I found out about a new product I had never heard of before. The Blue Corn Alliance is a new project that supports farmers in San Mateo Ozolco, a small town in Mexico, by selling their native corn meal product, Pinole, in Philadelphia.
The blue corn meal is being sold in the Italian Market or by delivery for $5.50 per pound. Apparently this stuff is high in protein and gluten free. I tried a sample of a gluten free pinole cheesecake and it was both different and delicious. If I were a baking woman, I would have picked up the cornmeal in a heartbeat.
Instead I bought a $2 soy milk shake made with the stuff. It had an horchata-esque taste going on and I wish it was available everywhere so I could have one for breakfast every morning. I read that pinole is also great at keeping you full, so it seems the perfect way to start your morning. I should probably just buy the stuff and make the shakes myself.
Support the Mexican farmers by purchasing their yummy and versatile product, it is a win-win for everyone.
