Why Not? Southern BBQ at an Irish Pub

When I heard that Chef Coates from the now defunct Bebe’s bbq was coming to Fergie’s pub, I thought – random pairing, but awesome. Anything that brings bbq closer to Center City is a win, as long as its good, of course. I already liked Fergie’s for the beer menu and the new menu gave me another reason to come by.

The pub setting provides for some crappy ass pictures, but what can ya do.

Had to start with the fried pickles. Unlike those you find at Hooters, these were sliced extra thin which made them more refined. This is a great snack to order even if you are just coming in for a beer.

A quarter pound of smoked pork spareribs falls under the ML budget at $9. For that, you get about 5 ribs with fries and bbq sauce on the side. The ribs were covered in an impressive thick bark and were completely smoke infused. Those smokers must be doing some work in the back of this pub.

Pulled pork is on the menu, and sandwiches are $10 with a choice of “West Carolina” which is more saucy  (the Original Bebe’s version) or “East Carolina” which is more vinegary. I had the West; it was a rather large sandwich and not too saucy.

If you are thinking about a side of mac and cheese to go with your barbecue, be warned- this is a meal in itself. What it was missing a crispy crust, it was made up for in cheesiness. Whatever combo of cheese they are using is spot-on. Deep fried mac and cheese is also an option, but I was trying to be health conscious…

While it was unfortunate that Bebe’s had to close, we can’t complain about good bbq being brought closer to Center City. The Pub + Southern bbq match up is whacky, but I am all about it.  Just prepare yourself, this is no light lunch.

The + (what someone who likes this place would say)

  • Great beer selection
  • Fried pickles go great with beer
  • I like super smokey ribs
  • I am looking for a big southern lunch

The – (what someone who doesn’t like this place would say)

  • I don’t love my ribs to be overwhelmed with smoke
  • I like a crust on my mac and cheese
