PROFILE: Downtown Lunch’er “Tam”

As is customary here on Midtown Lunch: Downtown, every Tuesday we’ll profile a different lunch’er and get their recommendations for places to eat in Downtown NYC. This week, we have Tam who works in the FiDi and is hooked on Korean fried chicken and BBQ ribs from a cart.

Name: Tam Nguyen

Occupation: System engineer

Where you work: Water & John streets

Age: 28

Favorite kinds of food: This is tough. If I pick one kind of favorite food, it wouldn’t be fair for the rest. But if someone pointed a gun at me, I’d say Japanese.

Least favorite foods: Fish. I can’t do fish, unless it’s salmon. Bonus points if it’s smoked and with dill.

Favorite lunches downtown: I’m very happy that BonChon chicken is now back open in the FiDi on John St. (at Cliff). Must get the lunch combo!

I would say one of my favorite spots down here is the Veronica’s Kitchen cart on Water St. (near Pine). I make a point to go there at least once every other week. People tend to go crazy over her fish dishes, but I have a thing for the BBQ beef ribs, which are only available on Wednesdays and Fridays. Also, her hot sauce is top notch, and it’s for sale!
The “go-to” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often: Clarke’s Standard on Maiden Lane (at Pearl).

Places downtown you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch: Downtown? Clarke’s Standard

Dream job location, purely for lunch purposes, and why: I’m quite happy with the FiDi. There are lots of trucks and restaurants in the area.

Anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch: Downtown readers? What’s your favorite place to eat?

I’m not going to say a definitive favorite place to remain a little impartial, but I am curious about what you all pick as No. 1! And as always, if you would like to be next week’s Profiled Lunch’er (or know somebody you’d like to nominate), email us at
