Frying Dutchmen’s Fries: Lunch Or Snack?

Ever since the Frying Dutchmen truck launched selling one item (fries) I’ve been waiting for them to come downtown so I could see if this was really something you could call lunch. They were parked on Water St. & John today so I wandered over in the heat to have something of a second lunch.

I don’t know if it was the fact that they only serve fries, that it was about 1:30 or that you guys are just hitting the wall when it comes to new food trucks, but there was no line. The menu is pretty simple: Belgian frites in regular or sweet potato form that come in three sizes, and a list of sauces to choose from. The sauce choices are a little overwhelming as there are technically 18 of them but they don’t every one every day. It’s best to look at your choices online beforehand.

I got a medium half-and-half order ($6) with the prickly pear mustard sauce. Yes, that’s right, I paid $6 for an order of fries. This is why this truck is tricky because while it was a decent sized cone of fries I think if this was all I ate for lunch I’d still be hungry. And it’s a bit too expensive for a snack, although the smallest size is $4.50. On a side note, I’m not sure if they guy was confused or what but I was charged $7.62 for my $6 medium order. WTF?

The fries were fresh and nicely salted and I like that they have so many sauces to choose from. I was warned when I ordered the prickly pear mustard sauce that it had some kick to it, and was offered a taste. It wasn’t hot so much as tasting like a sweet wasabi.  This was quality food, but I’m going to call it more of a mid-afternoon snack than something you call lunch unless you’re a light eater or really like fried potatoes.

  • Yea I got the Poblano BBQ Sauce. It was good. What was weird is they charge tax and it doesn’t even out dollarwise–who makes change for the foodtrucks?? Other than that it was fine. Ended up landing @ Soul Daddy which was just ok.

I think the sauce is a dollar too

  • Sounds ridic expensive for french fries from a truck. But if I had to stand in a truck, in front of a fryer, in 90+ degree heat I’d also charge an arm and a leg.

  • Looks like they don’t give you too many french fries for $6. I feel Pommes Frites might still be a better value.
