Downtown Lunch: Sandwich House is an OK Replacement for Rosario's

Midtown workers shouldn’t have all the fun, so to even the score, I’ve brought on Daniel Krieger as an official Downtown Lunch Correspondent to write up some of the tasty stuff you can get in the lower half of Manhattan. He’s a great photographer (ensuring good food porn), but more importantly he is a lover of cheap, unique and delicious eats (or as I like to call it- Midtown Lunch’ish food.)

Ever since Rosario’s closed last June, I’ve been dying for a giant Italian sandwich replacement. Of course nothing could replace the awesomeness that was Rosario’s, with overstuffed sandwiches and smiling Joe Rosario… But I hit up Sandwich House this week on Ann street and it came pretty damn close.

Sandwich House has mostly Italian offerings, with a long list of salads, sandwiches, soups, and pastas. But like the name says, you should go for the sandwiches, which are heavy on the Italian meats and cheeses, all made with great bread. I was originally going to go for just a sandwich (which are slightly expensive at $8.55) but when I saw that you can get a drink, a bowl of soup and a half sandwich for $10 (tax included) I realized that was the way to go. Of course that decision was also aided by the amazing tomatoish soup smell, and all the rainy weather we’ve been having lately.

They have a rotating list of soups to choose from such as chicken noodle and lentil, but I went with the Papa Pomodoro, a tomato based soup cooked with chunks of country bread. It was very hot and hardy (wait… that sounds really dirty- like “yeah baby call me Papa Pomodoro!”)

Where was I? Oh right… for my half sandwich I tried the Prosciutto Di Parma, mascarpone, tomato, and basil sandwich on the Tuscan White bread. The half sandwich was a solid offering, not at all stingy with the Prosciutto, and the creamy mascarpone was great, its almost mayo-like consistency bringing it all together with the bread. The soup was excellent as well, and I was totally stuffed after having both of them.

I’m going to say it was one of the better sandwiches I’ve had downtown since the passing of *sniff sniff* Rosario’s.

  • You get credit for effort, but I’m still waiting for Rosario’s to re-open. They said they were trying to find space… *sighs*

That does look pretty good though… Papa Pomodoro… LOL

  • My heart still cries when I think of Rosarios and how it was taken so quickly from me (after only 3 visits)…That was the first establishment I found via Midtown Lunch (and It was a downtown establishment!) .I was there the last day and was as close to tears as I get when a beloved food establishment shuts its doors. I have found 2 replacements in the last year as well, Milano Deli on 34th between Madison and 5th (HUGE Italian sandwiches for 7.75:get the milano special and you will almost think you are back at rosarios) and Defontes of Brooklyn on 21st and 3rd (manhattan) (rivals if not exceeds Rosarios (the hot salad and marinated mushrooms “make” the Nicky’s Special (#1) though out of the ML range).

  • Good food porn Daniel. Just watch out, Yvo is going to be calling you her Papa Pomodoro now ;-)

  • Mamacita – lol! Did you see his Twitter? He’s telling EVERYONE to call him that!
