A Country Loft on Top of a Center City Deli?

Ok, country loft might be a huge exaggeration but Pastrami and Things brings more to the table than the average deli, with one major perk being the random, decorated dining area up the stairs.

What it looked like, and what I ate (hint: it may be in the restaurant’s name) after the jump…

The Monday/Tuesday Parmigiana Specials at Shank’s

Shank’s, a decades old Philly staple, houses its newer Center City shack location at 15th St, right in the middle of all the hustle and bustle. Although this is not the original location, the interior has that chromey, olde-timey luncheonette appeal.

The lunch specials might be difficult to navigate. As I understand it, the chicken parmigiana is often available as a daily special for around $7. But on Mondays and Tuesdays, several sandwiches are available on special for $5.99 including a fountain soda. I discovered that to get this price you need to specifically ask for the Monday/Tuesday special.

The Sandwiches at Angelo & Josephine’s are the Best Food in Manayunk

Listen, if you work in Manayunk, live in Manayunk, or plan on passing through it- you MUST get a sandwich at Angelo and Josephine’s. I have done my fair share of eating in the Yunk, and I think I will go so far as saying their sandwiches are the best food in town.

The small gourmet Italian spot is so unassuming; I can understand why many locals don’t even know about it. Inside is a deli counter, racks of imported Italian food products, fridges with pasta and tomato sauce, various baked desserts (plus they fill cannolis to order!), and one little table to eat at. So have a seat, if one is available, and wait for your sandwich to be prepared, or call ahead if you are in a hurry- they like to take their time over here, to lovingly cut each slice of whatever goodness you order.

Frites with a side of Wrap at European Republic

European Republic is a small wrap and frites place in Olde City with a solid lunch special. $7 gets you a wrap, a small order of frites, and a drink.  The list of wraps is long and mostly healthy, but I was most interested in getting those Belgian frites.

Serious Sandwiches at Jake’s Sandwich Board

I love reading menus of the places I plan on going to eat. When I first looked at the menu for 12th Street’s newest sandwich joint, Jake’s Sandwich Board,  the words “whole roasted pig” jumped right off the page and smacked me in the face. Then I got hit again- some crazy genius at Jake’s designed a sandwich with hot dog slices and rib eye steak and another with turkey breast, bacon, and a black cherry spread. I knew I was going to like this place.

Pizza Thursday Finale: The Philly Prizzasteak

My ears perked up like a hungry little puppy when Lunch’er Mwinston mentioned the South St Special in the forums, or as I like to call it “The Philly Prizzasteak”. I don’t often like to eat things just to say I did, but there was something special behind this Philly centric concept. I can’t take credit for this monster combo, but I am excited to share it with ML readers and I hope you are horrified and delighted with what our stomachs accomplished. Here is what went down…

Take a Guess What I Ordered at Bubby’s Brisket and Bugsby’s Wieners

I can’t help but love the idea of a little shack that serves up a limited random menu of meat. So when a friend who lives right by Bubby’s Brisket and Bugsby’s Weiners told me about it, I was happily confused. Brisket and hot dogs? I could be very into that.

Half a brisket sandwich is $6 and a hot dog with the works (kraut, onions, relish)  is only one dollar! Chili dogs, and big ass 1/4 dogs are also on the menu. So are cheesesteaks, but I needed to stick to Bubby’s signature sandwich.
