Bowls of Bacon and Unauthentically Great Cheesesteaks at Milkboy

My lunch at Fuel on Monday left me in desperate need of some calories. Pretty much any one of the menu items at Milkboy, the 3 month old coffee shop/bar/ music venue/restaurant, has as many calories as the entire menu at Fuel.  I deserved it.

I’d Rather Be Low on Fuel

Fuel is a restaurant with 2 locations in Philly and a  slogan that should have been my first warning sign; “everything under 500 calories.” The big glass doors show tables that are full, so I thought, maybe they are making the most out of those 500 calories. I tried to keep an open mind, but by the end of the meal, I was missing my extra calories.

Cake And The Beanstalk Is The Neighborhood Coffee Shop You’ve Been Looking For

When Cake and the Beanstalk opened last March, replacing the 2nd location of cupcake shop Flying Monkey, I had a good feeling about it. The neighborhood needed a place to get it’s morning started, and cupcakes are usually not what you want for that. The owner, Dan, is the sweetest guy and a serious baker.

The small coffee shop was updated with local art and funky furniture. You can sit in the sunroom that looks over the community garden. And when it is nice out you can sit outside on the tiny patio. The shop is normally filled with people working on their laptops while enjoying a coffee, but there is almost always a seat available. It didn’t take long after they opened for me to find my favorite thing on the menu.

Chickie’s Italian Sandwiches Are Classically Great, But Now I Am Dreaming Of A Crazy Custom Order

Chickie’s Italian Deli has been serving sandwiches since 1993 in the Italian Market. I could go into the history but instead I think you should put on some headphones and watch the Chickie’s “webmercial” and prepare yourself to be entertained like you never have been.

Did you watch it? I was kidding, but the video does sum up how family and neighborhood- centric this place is. A trip over there was long overdue.

The Hoagie I Was Fated to Eat at P & S Italian Deli

This is a story of a business’s mistake that resulted in my favor.  A friend brought me to P&S Italian Deli, an outpost of the P & S Ravioli local chain that sells frozen pasta. This particular location is known for also serving some top notch sandwiches. I kind of didn’t accept this fact, mostly because I wasn’t in the mood for a sandwich and when my friend ordered a sandwich, I did not.  I was in a bad hoagie place. I had just been to Atlantic City’s White House hoagie shop, and it disappointed. Had I checked the internets and known this place had gotten a seal of a approval from Philly Phoodie, and very  recently, a mention on the Serious Eats slide show of best hoagies, I would have ordered my own sandwich. So when the take out sandwich was opened and we discovered that cheese was not left out as requested by my lactose intolerant friend, it was like the fates had spoken and I was meant to have the sandwich passed down to me.

Vibrant Truck Food from Latin Farmer

Over the summer when I first heard that a “sustainable”, “local”, “Latin”, food truck was coming to Center City I couldn’t have been more intrigued. Now the truck is all set up and is serving lunch Wednesday through Sunday at LOVE Park, Norris Square, and Headhouse Market. The menu is ambitious, with things like choripan sandwiches and hanger steak wraps it sets itself apart from other food truck in the city.  When finally making my way to order at the lime green truck, I was greeted by some friendly gentleman who told me that today was a good day- heirloom tomato salad was being served with the meals.

Enzo’s Makes Calzones More Deadly (And More Delicious) By Frying Them

Earlier this summer, Meal Ticket reported that Shank’s was moving from the chrome covered little space on 15th street and would be replaced by Enzo’s. While looking to see how the menu has changed, I saw the list of panzarotti’s, and while I wasn’t sure what one was, the many stuffings options (pepperoni, steak, sausage) gave me a feeling this would be something I would really like. I was more than happy to check them out for the sake of reporting back.
