Why you need a pastry you don’t know how to pronounce: the Kouign Amann from Rival Bros

Rival Bros successfully made the cross over from truck to a cafe in Graduate Hospital last year. Not being a coffee person, it was the baked goods that brought me in, especially knowing they come from the genius bakers at High Street.  Tables are scarce, so you may need to prepare yourself for a to-go order like I had to.

From their small, savory cafe menu I picked an artichoke sandwich on toasted bread with miso hummus. Sort of a classic, classy cafe sandwich with a twist. Miso hummus is a really clever- I like getting inspiration for cooking when I eat out.

For dessert, I was delighted to see  Kouign Amann on the counter: pronounced “queen a-mahn.”   Like the fleshlight of desserts, I couldn’t help but insert myself in to it and I made a big mess when I was done. This gift from the French is a buttery, flaky pastry with a hint of sweetness like a croissant, but with pull apart layers.    The version available at Rival Bros also happens to be coco and rose petal dusted, for extra fancy.

You don’t have to be a coffee person to enjoy Rival Bros, but at least have a love of baked goods and the ability to not think about butter content in the presence of pastries.

  • Now if only I could find the fleshlight of food bloggers I’d be all set

Both of those look burned. Maybe it’s just the cocoa on the kouign, but that sandwich is definitely charred around the edges.

    • Maype pizza-crustish char, but also, if the bread had a dark crust to begin with, that sandwich looks lovely.

I’m just glad Jamie is back! And serving up such softballs to wayne.
