Magpie’s Sweet and Savory

Magpie opened about a year and a half ago on South Street.  I remember hearing about its opening, excited for the sweet and savory pies. The cute space is open Tues-Sunday, for lunch and dinner. Pies change seasonally. Now that is winter, the pies are hearty as hell.

The mac and cheese pie with garlic parm breadcrumbs probably wouldn’t be as good in the summer.  This little pot pie is Atkin’s worst nightmare, though the side salad helps strike somewhat of a balance. I liked the garlic flavor, the use of  quality cheese, and breaking in to the pretty crust, but I missed the stringy cheese goo and the burnt cheese topping that makes the standard mac and cheese so enticing. At $9.50, it is a little pricy, but its more filling than it looks.

The signature sweet pie- butterscotch bourbon- was the real showstopper.  Smooth, sweet, and dignified. This pie suits all seasons. I am glad it isn’t going anywhere.
