Lets Play a Rename Game (but keep the recipe): Soup Kitchen Cafe’s Meatloaf Sandwich

I don’t really love that they named their restaurant Soup Kitchen Cafe.  To me, this name for-profit cafe it seems to be making light of the locations that provide desperately needed food to hungry people who can’t afford it. I get that soup is a big draw here, but you could incorporate “soup” in to your name so many other creative ways right?

  • Souper Duper Cafe
  • Souperior Kitchen
  • Soupbliminal Cooking and Friends

I am going assume that was not their intention at all, and let it slide, especially since I was really happy with my lunch there. The owner seems like a nice guy. And its a good thing that Soup Kitchen Cafe is bringing comfort food to a developing part of Philly.

The menu includes  breakfast, soups (obv), and sandwiches. You can also do a 1/2 sandwich, soup combo for $10, which sounded perfect. Soups rotate daily, and I had the tomato basil. A solid version of the classic; I liked that it was acidic and just a bit creamy.

I picked the meatloaf sandwich to go with my soup.  I am not normally one for meatloaf, the idea of an entire loaf of ground meat makes me nervous. Not that I can’t handle a loaf size amount of meat, but I just assume the inner part is going to be under cooked OR the whole thing will be dry. Loafs should just refer to bread. I had an ex boyfriend who ate this horrid lunch meat ham, macaroni loaf just to gross me out.  While we are renaming things, could we call meatloaf something else?

However, this particular meatloaf sandwich was well received on Yelp. And the smoked bacon, aged white cheddar, and tomato-thyme mayo that go with it sounded too good.   Served on a toasted baguette, it had just enough gooey cheese and tang from the mayo to match the salty bacon and savory meatloaf.  The seasoning of my piece of …loaf just enhanced the meat flavor.  The sandwich was soupblime.

THE + (What somebody who likes this place would say)

  • Soups every day!
  • Great loaf!

THE – (What somebody who doesn’t like this place would say)

  • Could have a name with less connotations

I’m gonna have to try that sandwich. I like this place a lot, and it isn’t far from me. They have a good shakshuka, though it’s possibly as far from traditional as you can imagine. That’s something else that should probably be renamed!

Their House Breakfast Sandwich receives raves, and sounds excellent, but I haven’t tried it yet. My favorite sandwich there so far has probably been the roasted beet and goat cheese. The crabcake was good, as well.

I’d buy buckets of their chickpea salad. Nothing too fancy, just simplicity done exceedingly well.

  • How about rebranding as a sandwich place called “Pinch of Loaf?”

My vote is for a Britney inspired soup place called “Soups! I did it again”

  • @jay do not miss this sandwich, it really was exceptionally good

@steve thats some old school britbrit, that the kids these days might not even appreciate! I do though
