If You Are Going To Do Restaurant Week, Order Local: Philly Homegrown + Restaurant Week at GTC

You know its restaurant week again, right? This week and next week, excluding weekends, the 3 or 4 course $20 lunch and $35 dinner is back. There is a twist this year though, a twist I am all about. Philly Homegrown (part of Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation) has worked with Center City District and participating restaurants to get at least one option on each RW menu to include locally sourced ingredients. Philly Homegrown is all about promoting both tourists and locals alike to appreciate our locally sourced food, and why shouldn’t we? We grow nice stuff around here. At Garces Trading Company, many of the lunch options have that red tractor next to them- meaning, this dish uses some local goodness. Lucky for me, I got to try those tractor approved dishes.

Vibrant Truck Food from Latin Farmer

Over the summer when I first heard that a “sustainable”, “local”, “Latin”, food truck was coming to Center City I couldn’t have been more intrigued. Now the truck is all set up and is serving lunch Wednesday through Sunday at LOVE Park, Norris Square, and Headhouse Market. The menu is ambitious, with things like choripan sandwiches and hanger steak wraps it sets itself apart from other food truck in the city.  When finally making my way to order at the lime green truck, I was greeted by some friendly gentleman who told me that today was a good day- heirloom tomato salad was being served with the meals.

More Chicken? A Barbacoa Preview

Yes, I am reporting on chicken for the 2nd day in a row. But for good reason. Last night, while on a food adventure, I stumbled into the Grand Opening celebration for Barbacoa, Upper Darby’s new Peruvian Style Rotisserie Chicken Place.

I really had no idea what was going on, but I walked in and was handed a plate of chicken to try out.

Rotisseur Wins at Banh Mi

When Rotisseur opened for lunch this summer, I wondered if it would fall under the ML under $10 budget. The claims of “cage-free, hormone-free, antibiotic-free” chicken and sides made me skeptical it might not. Then I found out that the entire menu, unless I was craving a whole chicken for lunch, would be ML affordable.

On my trip there, I admired the way the small space was decorated with just the right ratio of modern to homeyness. The counter of magazines and newspapers to read while you wait was a nice touch, though I preferred people watching at the big window facing 21st Street.
