PROFILE: Philly Luncher “Dan”

As is customary at Philly Lunch, every Tuesday we turn over the site to a different lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Philadelphia. This week, it is Dan,  local “yenta“, as we say,  for the Daily News.

Name: Dan Gross

Age: 32

Occupation: Philadelphia Daily News columnist

Where in Philly do you Work?: Broad & Callowhill

Favorite Kind of Food: Tough choice, maybe Chinese.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Bleu cheese. It should be outlawed.

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Philly: For a late lunch, the Kobe sliders/hot dogs at Sampan’s Happy Hour (124 S. 13th) are excellent and as disgustingly, and shamefully decadent as it is, so is the Cheesesteak Pretzel Burger at PYT in the Piazza at Schmidts. I also like the vegetarian ham dish and corn and tofu soup at Charles Plaza (10th & Vine) None of these are particularly regular spots for me, but they’re all good.

“Go-To” Lunch Place You and Your Coworkers Eat at Too Often? The best spots up this way are St. Stephen’s Green at 17th & Green, Prohibition at 13th & Buttonwood and Gus’s Lunch Truck at Broad & Callowhill. Our cafeteria at the Daily News/Inquirer building is pretty good too.

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? San Francisco. I visited a friend there for five days and had the same lunch each day. A vegetarian wrap with avocado and bean sprouts and few other ingredients I can’t recall. I know it doesn’t sound like much, but it was awesome. A place called the Blue Front Cafe on Haight Street.

I certainly have some friends who would lobby against your bleu cheese ban, Dan!

A breakfast sandwich from Gus was an almost daily staple when I was in high school down the street at Roman. Oh, how I miss that wonderful truck.
