Pizza Thursday Week 4: A Sober Story

This week I decided to check out 2 places that are popular spots for late night non-sober snacking. How would they fare during the light of day? In this corner of the ring we have Mama Angelina’s, a late night favorite due to its proximity to the subway and the fact that it is open until 2 on the weekends. In the other corner, 13th St Pizza, also offering late night hours, affectionately known in the area as Gay pizza, being across the street from the gay bar Woody’s.

The slices at Mama Angelina are big, with a crust that is at the right level of crispiness. The slices could have used more sauce and the plain slice ($2.40) was really lacking in flavor. The sausage slice, however, was decent- strips of salty sausage perked up the pizza nicely. Mama’s sausage slice was the winner of the day.

13th St Pizza was a let down, for some strange reason the slices were not tasting as delicious in the light of the day. The regular slice ($2) was floppy and didn’t have enough cheese or taste. 13th St has more fun toppings than Mama Angelina’s. But the buffalo chicken on the specialty slice just tasted dry to me. I should have stuck with my usual late night request from them, pepperoni pizza with a drizzle of buffalo sauce on top.

THE + (What somebody who likes this place would say)

  • Decent sausage slice
  • Good crust

THE – (What somebody who doesn’t like this place would say)

  • Not enough flavor on the regular slice
