Pokey Truck Betting That L.A. Wants More Sushi Burritos

It’s no secret that the Jogasaki Truck is one of my favorite new trucks to hit Los Angeles in the past year. Their sushi burritos are not only the perfectly portable food truck treat, but they’re also a good value and delicious. If they parked outside my office, I’d probably eat one every day.  Most of the press they received (and it was a lot for awhile there) was of the “can you believe this truck is making sushi burritos!?” variety, but apparently there were others who saw Jogasaki for what it is… a genius idea, worthy of copying.

A few months ago The Pokey Truck hit the streets of Los Angeles, and if you thought their signature item was going to be Hawaiian poke (like you get at this great place on the Venice Beach boardwalk) guess again.  It’s another sushi burrito truck.

For $8 you can get what they call “Hawaiian Poke”, a sushi burrito filled with spicy tuna, crab salad, ahi salad, cucumber and rice wrapped in soy paper.

Or you can get their E-Poke, which is pretty much the same thing, but with eel.  The burrito is not as stuffed as Jogasaki’s version, and they have fewer options (where’s the shrimp tempura!?) but it satisfied my sushi burrito craving temporarily.

They also serve a rice-less burrito (who the hell would want that!?), rice bowls and a few appetizers that are pretty similar to what Jogasaki offers (like deep fried jalapeno poppers stuffed with spicy tuna) but their sushi burritos are clearly the signature item.

The Pokey Truck is definitely not as good as Jogasaki, but it’s good to see the sushi burrito spreading its wings.  And while I may not seek it out the way I stalk Jogasaki, I’d still support the truck if it was parked outside my office. And then maybe one day sushi burritos will no longer be a subject of ridicule, but the uber popular lunch item they so deserve to be.
