Midtown Lunch

This Thursday from 5pm-11pm Sugarhouse casino is hosting a food truck festival in its parking lot. There will be prizes, a food truck battle, and a DJ. And you can take a gambling break in between meals. The roster includes Jimmies Cupcake Co, Vernalicious, GIGI & BIG R, Local 215, SPOT, The Tamale Cart, Birds of Paradise,The Mini Trini , Say Cheese, Lil Dans, Gozen, Joe Spud, Sweetbox, Foo Truck, Made in the Shade, Rocco’s, and Chewy’s

Its a perfect way to experience the trucks you have been hearing about but haven’t had time to try during your lunch break.

This weekend was the 3rd Swedish Historical Museum Meatball Contest. I was thrilled to be back for another year to judge the amateur competitors. The tie for the win was between a a 77 year old man Louis Leonardi and the other, Michael Antinore, a father interested opening a meatball truck (look out Philly!). Runner up went to Swedish home cook Alison Bennett.

As for the professional winners, the crowd chose Dad’s Stuffing as a winner. A great choice, they did well last year and I loved the food I ate there on my trip post contest. The runners up were Mekong River and Antney’s Grub. It is safe to say, both are now on my to-do list.

• Friday, 6-11pm, 1390 Frankford Ave: Lutheran Settlement House Food Truck Pop Up eat at Little Baby’s, Mini Trini, Tamale Truck with part of proceeds going to support Adult Education and Employment, Domestic Violence, Senior Services, and Homeless Service programming

• Saturday, 12-8pm, 13th and Chestnut: Midtown Village Festival eat, drink, play games
• Sunday, 4-6pm, 1900 Pattison Avenue: Swedish Museum Meatball Contest $8 admission for all the delicious meatballs you can eat, vote for your favorite!

If anyone is looking for an out of state excursion the NY Vendy Awards are coming up on Saturday the 15th. The truck options are amazing! Greek, Chinese kebabs, Hala, tacos, a TON of desserts and more vendors are being announced every day.

Don’t forget the 2nd Annual Philly Vendy Awards are going down this Saturday. Last year, the last batch of tickets sold out at the door- so get yours in advance so you aren’t shut out! Judging last year’s event was so much fun, and this year I am looking forward to snacking on food from Don Memo’s, Lil Dan’s, Vernalicious, The Smoke Truck, Delicias, The King of Falafel, The Foo Truck, Yumtown, Lil Pop Shop, Sugar Philly, Little Baby’s, and Sweet Box.

Speaking of food truck parties-  the Philly Mobile Food Vendor Association is having a food truck round up at 27th and Girard this Friday night. Hope you are planning on taking advantage of these awesome food truck event this weekend!
