PROFILE: Philly Luncher “Marcos”
As is customary at Philly Lunch, every Tuesday we turn over the site to a different lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Philadelphia. This week it’s Marcos from the food blog, Fidel Gastro– I am particularly fond of the “Why Did I Eat This?” posts.
Name: Fidel, er, Marcos
Age: 31
Occupation: Aspiring but lazy food writer and cost estimator
Where in Philly do you Work?: 17th and Arch
Favorite Kind of Food:Processed
Least Favorite Kind of Food: Processed
Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Philly: Noodle with Pork Soy Sauce from Nan Zhou Hand Drawn Noodle House (927 Race Street); Dol Sot Bibimbop with spicy pork from Giwa (1608 Sansom); Pastrami Waffle Fries from Delicatessen (703 Chestnut Street); Village Burger topped with a fried egg at Village Whiskey (118 S 20th Street); Pork Fried Rice from the Chinese cart on the SW corner of 18th and JFK; Honest Tom’s fish tacos when he’s on 18th and Vine; Reading Terminal Market, especially DiNic’s and Sang Kee.
“Go-To” Lunch Place You and Your Coworkers Eat at Too Often? My co-workers don’t go out to lunch. It’s depressing. I usually drag my brother-in-law to Five Guys, which is now a bummer because they publish the calories. It helps to squint your eyes when you order, especially if you’re there as much as we are.
Place you discovered thanks to Philly Lunch (if any) Falafel Factory. It’s really good, but I question the $6 price tag.
If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? I used to work in Lower Manhattan, and there were two or three places that served something called tabasco chicken. It was super simple, just some boneless chicken chunks in a spicy cream sauce, but it was so damn good that I ate it twice a week. The other three days, it was Sophie’s for Cuban (pernil), Jiannetto’s pizza truck, Cafe Fonduta and Rosario’s for Italian, and this place Best of New York where they served these Frankenstein sandwiches that could have only been dreamed up after a few bong hits, stuff like chicken cutlets stuffed with pepperoni and topped with ranch dressing and crab cakes. And that was just the tip of the iceberg. The lunch possibilities were endless.
Is there anything you’d like to ask the Philly Lunch readers? Is there anything worth eating in Suburban Station? I’m always afraid that I’ll get stabbed down there, but if it’s in the name of a delicious lunch, I’m game.
I am so with you on loving Manhattan’s Sophie’s (fried pork with plantain sandwich for me). Come to Philly, Sophie!

The Frankenstein sandwiches sound incredible, sounds kinda like the food from the Rutger’s “grease trucks”
