Health-Conscious Pastas and Flatbreads at The Quick Fixx

Today,  Luncher John is making me jealous of  speedy yet refined take out food.

The Quick Fixx is the latest addition to the revitalizing area of South Street West. Situated a few doors down from Sawatdee and Jet Wine Bar (and just next door to Bob and Barbaras), The Quick Fixx serves both lunch and dinner for dine-in, takeout, and delivery. What sets it apart from the corner hoagie or pizza shop is its aim to provide health-conscious food quickly and at affordable prices.

From both the menu and the fact that you can see that the chef is actually wearing a chef coat, it’s clear that The Quick Fixx strives to make higher quality food. Instead of standard grill fare such as burgers and cheesesteaks, it offers flatbreads, pastas and salads. Each item is produced as if you were ordering from a nice Italian sit-down restaurant. Even The Quick Fixx’s “bar” food items of chicken tenders feature special touches.

The first item I tried was one of its artisanal grilled flatbreads. I chose the Lancaster, PA ($8), which consists of cherry tomato confit, sausage, shredded mozzarella, oregano, and extra virgin olive oil. It was a true flatbread and quite thin, though it still retained a soft and chewy texture. I’m a big fan of char marks on pizza from wood-fired or coal ovens, so I appreciated the grill marks on the bottom of the crust. Olive oil is drizzled throughout the very sizable serving. In fact, the only downside to the flatbread was that your hands get a little messy from the olive oil.

Even with multiple pasta selections to choose, there is also the option to build your own pasta, salad, or flatbread. In its commitment to healthy food, The Quick Foxx even offers several gluten free pastas, pasta sauce, and salad dressings. I decided to build my own dish of gnocchi with a creamy four cheese topping ($7). You get a pretty big bowl serving along with some bread. The gnocchi was excellent and savory, and the sauce was a good complimentary flavor. I can’t remember having gnocchi this tasty from a delivery or take-out establishment. Then again, it’s not as if you can readily order good gnocchi at too many of those types of places. Another nice touch: being provided a side container for parmesan cheese for the pasta.

I also sampled the Quick Fries ($3}, which are among the gluten free options. You have the choice of Parmigiano-Reggiano or Old Bay seasoning. As a big fan of Chickie’s and Pete’s Crab Fries, I naturally went with the Old Bay. I think the fries were my favorite part of the meal. It’s a huge bowl to the point that I could not finish it after eating all of the gnocchi. The Old Bay adds a nice touch, and you can dip them in the ketchup or garlic sauce provided with the order.

As a final bonus, The Quick Fixx offers several $10 cash specials (no tax) for dine-in and take-out orders before 4 p.m. You can try a flatbread or build your own pasta along with either fries or side salad and a drink. You can even choose two menu items (the Gnocchi Lasagna and the Smoky Roman) that are normally over $10 as part of the special.

I thoroughly enjoyed the tasty food, friendly service and convenience of The Quick Fixx. It would be refreshing if other lunch establishments devoted as much care into producing healthy and good quality food at affordable prices.
