Local Sausages from the Renaissance Sausage Truck come with a Price

Back in April, the Renassiance Sausage Truck made its debut, and everyone was excited. The truck guys hopped on the organic/local bandwagon, plus they offer a vegetarian sausage. They cleverly covered all their bases. After many months, I finally got to try their product. The other menu items are fancy sodas and teas, some side dishes, and breakfast sandwiches. The organic/local thing does not come cheap, all sausages are $7 or $8 dollars. Was it worth it?

Unfortunately, I came late and they were all out of sides, the roasted potatoes sounded nice though.  Lesson learned, do not come at the end of their shift. New to the menu, the spicy pork sausage  tasted of typical Italian seasonings and came topped with well caramelized onions.

The Mediterranean Sausage is like their version of a gyro. It is made with beef and lamb and comes with a lightly minted tzatziki covered salad, a little messy but fun.

I love a good food truck as much as the next guy. That being said, while I enoyed sitting in the fall sun eating my sausages, I couldn’t help think that for the price of one of these sausages I could go to Reading Terminal, and purchase one pound of home made sausage (that would be about 3 links) from Martin’s and still have money left over for onions or whatever else I want to put on top and some nice bread.  I get that it is organic and local, which is important to some people, but I prefer feeling the price I pay is somewhat proportional to the amount of food I get.

THE + (What somebody who likes this place would say)

  • Yay for organic, yay for local
  • Vegetarian options too
  • Flavorful sausages with thoughtful toppings

THE – (What somebody who doesn’t like this place would say)

  • I can cook up 3x the amount of sausage on my own for $8
  • They usually run out of everything by the end of their shift, so come early
  • Mostly a weekend operation, check the schedule on Twitter
