First Impressions: Phil’s Steaks Is The Real Deal, But You May Want To Tweak Your Order

As you may have heard, people are really into this truck called Phil’s Steaks which aims to school us New Yorkers on what a Philly cheesesteak should actually look/taste like. They use bread from Philly and  poached some of their staff from Philly. But how are the sandwiches once you get past the hype? We’ve already gotten a take from Rachel when the truck parked in Midtown and she generally said it was good, and straight ahead are what a couple of Downtown Lunch’ers thought, as well as the menu.

Above is the picture Lunch’er Deep sent in of what he got for his wait in the long, yet manageable line (that I did not have the time to stand in). Here’s what he thought:

I and my colleague ordered a 10″ with provolone and onions ($9 – no peppers). We opened the bag and the sandwich was wrapped in some wax paper which was ostensibly there to keep your hands from the grease, but it didn’t really work. The meat to roll ratio was solid, but it could definitely stand to have more cheese–which is an option next time at $0.75. The roll was good, saturated with juice and meat was good and moist, but sadly underseasoned, maybe to play better with whiz. After adding salt, I liked it and would give it another go. With extra cheese.

Rachel had also commented that her sandwich was light on the cheese, so if you like the dairy, maybe shell out the extra money. We also had a take from commenter Paul who had this to say:

Really good, on par with the best I’ve had in Philly and better meat than Pat’s and Geno’s which are the most recognizable. This was the second time I’ve gone, and was great both times. It’s officially the best cheesesteak in NYC in my opinion (and I’m from Philly.) It’s one of my go to lunch spots from now on.

So bottom line seems to be, if you like cheesesteaks, get thee to Phil’s Steaks. Next time they roll into the Financial District, I will hopefully have the time to brave the line for a full review. Until then, watch out on the ML Downtown Twitter Tracker to check out the truck’s whereabouts.

Finally, a look at the menu:
