Lenten Lunch: Blarney Stone’s Fried Fish Sandwich

Blarney Stone Happy Hour

Oh the Blarney Stone, my divey Midtown sanctuary. I find solace in your burgers, and sliders, and corned beef, and Guinness, but what about the practicing Catholics among us? Surely they want to celebrate the end of the workweek regardless of Lenten responsibilities. Enter the Blarney’s Fried Fish Sandwich…

Friday During Lent? It’s Time For Cheap Fried Fish Sandwiches!

Kim's Aunt Cart

Today is the first Friday of Lent, which for many practicing Catholics means no meats. Now there’s plenty of other great midtown meatless options, but for me there’s something about Lent that goes hand and hand with cheap fried fish sandwiches.

The Best Fried Fish Sandwich in Midtown is at Kim’s

With only two Fridays left in lent, Blondie and Brownie went on a mission to uncover the best fried fish sandwich in Midtown. In what some would view as an upset, Wendy’s beat out McDonald’s and Burger King- but the overall winner was the fried fish sandwich at Kim’s Aunt Kitchen Cart (on 46th btw. 5+6th).  Ladies, I won’t begrudge you an excuse to go out an eat four fried fish sandwiches in one lunch… but was the outcome ever in doubt?

Lent PSA: My Favorite Fried Fish Sandwich in Midtown

A friendly little Public Service Announcement for all our practicing Catholics.  If you are looking for a cheap and quick meatless lunch that doesn’t involve a filet o’ fish sandwich from McDonald’s, check out my personal favorite fried fish sandwich in Midtown at Kim’s Aunt Kitchen Cart on 45th St. just East of 6th Ave.  If you’re not into that, there are plenty of recommendations from my lent post from last year… all of the places listed still apply (except for Ressie May’s which has closed.)  I won’t be crazy enough to recommend Zen Burger (for fear of drawing the anger of all the commenters),  but their whole menu would be lent friendly as well…

The Friday Guide to Midtown Lent

It’s the second Friday of Lent, which means tons of practicing Catholics will be searching for a fishy lunch today.  Here are my picks for the best Midtown Lunch’es good for lent…

Any of the fish options at El Rincon del Sabor (47th btw. 5+6th).  Ecuadorians know how to do Lent right, and there are tons of fish items on the Friday menu.  A seafood paella type rice dish, shrimp ceviche, whole fried fish and more.  You can’t go wrong… surprisingly I didn’t see any Fanesca, the Ecuadorian bean soup made during Lent.

The octopus salad at Margon (46th btw. 6+7th).  It’s hard to walk into a place like Margon and not order meat (with rice, beans & plantains).  Lucky this chunky ceviche makes it a little bit easier.

Oms/b (45th btw. Lex+3rd).  Rice balls topped with fish.  How can you beat it?

The fake shrimp at most Midtown buffets by the lb.  Sure it’s a scam (they’re not even actual seafood)…. but they are delicious!  Especially the ones at Cafe Duke (50th btw. 6+7th).

My favorite seafood option in Midtown (and more Lent suggestions), after the jump… Read more »
