2009 Readers’ Poll: Best Sit Down Chinese

It’s time for the 3rd Annual Midtown Lunch Readers’ Poll. Your nominations are in, and between now and the end of the year I’ll be asking all of you to vote for the best Midtown Lunches in a whole range of categories. You can only vote once per category (so choose wisely), and official results will be posted after the new year.

Earlier today we asked for your favorite fast food Chinese. The steam table joints, where you walk up to a counter order your food and you’re off. But what about the sit down places, with waiters? A lot of them offer under $10 lunch specials… and are a breed unto themselves. Last years champ, Szechuan Gourmet, has touched a whole new group of lunchers with their new location on 57th Street, as a result will be tough to beat. But Chef Yu, Dong Hai, Oriental Noodle House, and Wu Liang Ye have their own rabid fans, and Main Noodle House is always packed. Plus, we’ve been hearing good things about newcomer Lan Sheng. Could this be the year for a surprise? Here are the nominees…

2009 Readers’ Poll: Best Street Meat

It’s time for the 3rd Annual Midtown Lunch Readers’ Poll. Your nominations are in, and between now and the end of the year I’ll be asking all of you to vote for the best Midtown Lunches in a whole range of categories. You can only vote once per category (so choose wisely), and official results will be posted after the new year.

Everybody knows 2009 was a huge year for street carts, but despite the increase in options one food still dominates the street food scene in Midtown: the Street Meat. And by that I mean chicken and/or lamb over rice with hot sauce and white sauce. Kwik Meal dethroned the Famous Halal Guys on 53rd and 6th in this years Street Meat Palooza– but all that means is that on any given day, any cart in Midtown can serve up the best plate of street meat. Consistency is a different story, and nobody can account for personal preference. So here’s your chance to sound off. Did Street Meat Palooza 2 get it wrong? What’s your favorite plate of street meat in Midtown? The nominees are…

2009 Readers’ Poll: Best Chinese Fast Food

You can only vote once per category (so choose wisely), and official results will be posted after the new year.

Everybody who reads this site knows I love cheap Chinese food, so this category is near and dear to my heart. It was actually a big year for cheap Chinese food in Midtown… Hing Won (and its practically identical sister restaurants Hop Won and Kar Won) started serving roast pig over rice this year. Will it ensure a three-peat victory in this category? Or will the NYC Cravings Trucks Taiwanese fried chicken topple the giant? Or maybe while these two battle it out at the top, a dark horse will emerge from the shadows! Only time will tell. The nominees are…

With a full year of Midtown Happy Hour posts under her belt, we thought it was time to give our correspondent “Mamacita” her own award. Clearly she is all about 9th Ave. (and Rudy’s is like the unofficial ML Happy Hour meetup spot), but still managed to find some other amazing spots in every corner of Midtown. Which one is your fave? Here are the nominees…

Trying to compare ramen and udon is not exactly fair… but you know what? Life isn’t fair. (And by that I mean, there just aren’t enough of each to warrant their own categories.) Solution? The Best Japanese soup category! Any one of the trinity of delicious old school Midtown ramen shops could take this one (Sapporo, Menchanko Tei, or Men Kui Tei), or will one of the new fat noodle upstarts pull off an upset? Here are the nominees.

2009 Readers’ Poll: Best Latin Food

You can only vote once per category (so choose wisely), and official results will be posted after the new year.

Nothing new really happened in the word of Midtown latin food steam tables… International House reinstated their all you can eat buffet (thank you baby jeebus!), and Aries Cafe was a great “new” (for me) freight elevator hallway discovery.  But nothing really game changing…  so will it be Margon again?  Or can somebody rise up to topple the 48th Street giant.  Here are the nominees…

2009 Readers’ Poll: Best Coffee

It’s time for the 3rd Annual Midtown Lunch Readers’ Poll. You can only vote once per category (so choose wisely), and official results will be posted after the new year.

I will fully admit to knowing nothing about coffee.  Sure I enjoy a cafe au lait when I’m in New Orleans (the secret ingredient is chicory), and loved the one coffee I had from Intelligentsia in Chicago, and I know that a latte from Starbucks tastes far better than a regular coffee from Starbucks.  But, my personal favorite coffee drink in Midtown is an Iced Capp from Tim Horton’s.  So clearly I’m not attending any cuppings in my free time.  That’s why I’m leaving this one entirely to you guys… and not to determine whether or not McDonald’s cheap coffee is better than Dunkin Donuts.  This is for those times when you want a real cup of coffee.  And the nominees are…

Midtown saw a big-time giant in the falafel business enter the playing field this year (Maoz), and with last year’s winner (Olympic Pita) having an identity crisis this prize could go to anybody. Will it be from a cart? Do Crisp’s crazy “handbags” have a chance? You guys decide. Here are the nominees for best falafel:

Let’s kick this thing off with a big one, shall we? Best burger. With a full year under its belt, did Five Guys do enough to overtake perennial favorite, the Burger Joint? Can the deep fried awesomeness of the schnitzel burger overcome the fact that you can only eat it once a month (at most.) Whichever spot wins, one thing is for sure… now that the Shake Shack is on its way, this could be the last year this award is up for grabs. The nominees are:
