Toast Monster’s Steak And Potato Sandwich Is Kind Of Amazing

When we last visited the Toast Monster cart in January, Brian gave a favorable review of their mac and cheese / sloppy joe sandwich. Since then, the menu has expanded a bit, with pepperoni being added as a $1 add-on for the grilled cheese and chicken parm sandwiches. More importantly, though, the steak and potato sandwich has become a permanent menu item. Check it out after the jump!

This thing has chunks of steak, potato, mozzarella cheese, and gravy sandwiched between two generously buttered, fluffy slices of Texas toast. Gosh, where do I even begin? The steak was surprisingly well-seasoned, tasting pleasantly peppery. It was definitely well-done, but not at all overcooked – each piece was juicy and bursting with wonderful, steak-y flavor. The gravy was thick and dark, soaking into the bread, but not so much that it got soggy. And oooh, the cheese!

There were multiple handfuls of shredded cheese thrown in here and it all melted perfectly to form a cheesy, goopy mess of awesomeness. Because the toast was buttered and heated on a grill, instead of a “steak sandwich,” the whole thing felt more like a grilled cheese… just one with steak, potatoes, and gravy in it. It’s a little messy, but the cheese did a decent job of gluing things together. I was able to pick up the sandwich and eat it with my hands, though I didn’t actually remove it from the paper wrapping it came in. I think you’re maybe supposed to pick it up in the paper – it spares your hands from getting gravy all over them and it neatly collects any pieces of steak that may fall out.

For $8, this is a good deal. I’ve bought bigger sandwiches for that price, but this one’s still plenty filling and offers something unique. Get a drink on the side and you’ll likely be satisfied. Personally, I can’t wait to head back to Toast Monster and eat this thing again. They have a few parking spots in midtown, so make sure to check out their Twitter or the ML Twitter Tracker to find ’em!
