PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “PJ”
Every Tuesday we turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week it’s PJ, a carb lover who thinks Trini Paki Boys is the ideal lunch.

Where in Midtown do you work? For a well-known fashion designer on 40th and 8th
Favorite Kind of Food: I’m a total carb, so first pick’s gotta be Italian. But the flavors in Indian and Middle Eastern foods are just amazing – I’m a little late to the Halal party but I am definitely making up for lost time. Really, any good combinations of meat/bread/cheese with fresh ingredients and good sauce/seasoning complements and I’m there.
Least Favorite Kind of Food: Sushi, salad, mushrooms (it’s a texture thing, not a taste thing). And let me be clear here: I will never eat another turnip again. Ever.
Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: A chicken tikka masala and a double from Trini Paki Boys (on 43rd btw. 5+6th) is absolutely my perfect lunch in midtown. The non-veggie platter with Puri at Famous Dal Wagon (on 39th & 6th). The falafel at Pick-A-Pita (RIP). A cuban from Margon (on 46th btw. 6+7th). The provolone chicken sandwich from Previti Pizza (on 41st btw. Park+Lex). Just about anything from Cer Te on 55th btw. 5+6th (I once walked 16 blocks for one of their monthly sandwiches, and I’d do it again).
“Go-To” Lunch Place You and Your Coworkers Eat at Too Often? Guy and Gallard on 40th street. The boring menu is the same day after day, but it’s just too convenient (my company actually has its own entrance to them, we don’t even need to go outside).
Places you have discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch? Trini Paki Boys (thank you), Margon, Previti, Cer Te, Big D’s Grub truck (feh), Go Go Curry, Biryani Cart (shame what’s happened to them), Kim’s Aunt Kitchen, Main Noodle House, Troy Turkish Grill, just to name a few.
If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? I’m from Brooklyn, so I think I already live there. Bay Ridge is almost too packed with bars and restaurants that feature amazing food from just about any country or culture you can imagine.
Anything you’d like to ask the midtown lunch readers? Since I can’t count on Ming Du being open one day to the next, and I’m too far from Momofuku, where can I find good pork buns in or near Midtown West?

A 41 year old geek named “PJ”, self proclaimed “late to the halal party” looking for leads on buns? ML has come to this? A far cry from the days of barely exposed clavicles, witty repartee from Wayne and Rudy just being Rudy and VERY entertaining (RIP).

The only reliable pork bun operations I know of are at Lunch Box Buffet on 34th and 8th and a nameless Chinese bakery on 35th just off of 8th. The nameless place is under a scaffold so you won’t see it just passing by. All it says is “bakery” but they do make pork buns.
Fuji Bakery is an option as well, on 35th closer to 7th than 8th. Their pork buns are amazingly good but the rest of the food is the definition of questionable.
TBH, if you’re heading that far down south anyway, your best bet is to peek over at Ming Du just to make sure they haven’t been DoH’d that week.

Are you sure you’re not a hospital janitor? Don’t know of any other pork buns that far out, unfortunately. If I worked that close to Go Go Curry I’d definitely be fat.
