Hot Jumbo Bagels Makes A Terrific Bagel & Lox Sandwich

I realized when I was writing the breakfast for lunch post that we haven’t mentioned longtime east side resident Hot Jumbo Bagels, a favorite of mine from when I once upon a time lived on east 56th street. Although 2nd avenue is out of bounds, it is worth the walk, especially with the weather the way it is these days.

The reason I left it off the breakfast past, but am writing about it now, is that my favorite order errs on the side of lunch: a lightly baked everything bagel with scallion cream cheese and lox ($8).

If you’re lucky, your bagel will still be warm, because they’ve just brought out a fresh batch from the back. (You can even inquire about what’s freshest — it’s worth it!) Whether at Jumbo or elsewhere, I always ask for lightly baked everything bagels to ensure they are perfectly squishy. A shmear of scallion cream cheese on both halves adds an oniony bite. The picture above demonstrates how generous they are with the amount of lox in the sandwich.

Overall, I prefer Hot Jumbo Bagels over nearby popular bagel mecca Ess-a-Bagel. The lines are shorter, yet the bagels are just as good, if not better. Ess-a-Bagel does offer more options both on the bagel front, in terms of shmears and other options. But what Jumbo does, they do really well, and it’s absolutely worth the walk east.

  • I find that place depressing, and other than the fact that it’s open 24 hours, have found little reason to go in there. (I live on 54th nearby.) At $8, I won’t be getting that bagel and lox anytime soon. For a really great bagel, head further east to Tal bagels on 1st Ave. between 53rd/54th.

I would have to disagree and say that Ess-a-Bagel’s actual bagels DESTROY Jumbo any day, all day. I have worked right next to E-a-B for 5 years and the first 2 I spent going to Jumbo’s to avoid the lines and thinking it had to be over rated. Oh how I wish I could return all those horrible bagels for what I now know are the BEST bagels in NYC.

    My $0.02.

  • Lightly baked to ensure bagels are squishy? Seriously? It seems you are extremely unqualified to review bagels. They aren’t rolls, they should be chewy on the outside not soft and squishy.

  • $8 isn’t bad for that lox sandwich. They seem pretty generous with lox given the high price of lox.

  • I love cream cheese lox bagel!! I can definitely use a jumbo one! Too bad this spot is too far from my work

Absolutely THE best bagels I have found in NYC… The everything is always perfectly baked and covered w/ an abundance of toppings.

My office has nicknamed this spot “The Tuna Place” as they make a mean tuna salad. Tuna + lettuce on an everything bagel = $4.50.

    HIGHLY recommend. =)
