Pick-a-Pita is Now Closed!?
Got word from Lunch’er James last week that Pick-a-Pita (on 8th btw 39+40th), the home of french fry-stuffed shwarma and one of Sam Sifton’s favorite spots has closed it doors. Sadly, there’s no sign explaining the closure and I don’t think there is any sort of Jewish holiday going on. Does anyone know when they shut their doors or why?

Unfortunately I peeked through the windows and it’s completely stripped and cleaned out–no tables, no counters, nothing :-(

That was fast. They seemed $1+$2 too expensive, but it was quality food. No shawarma in the hood now.

The extra buck or two was likely to cover the cost of the kosher certification, but who knows.

Roll and Go has a pretty good shawarma, and it’s close by on 38th and 8th. I do agree with everyone else that it’s sad that Midtown has lost yet another lunch institution.

Ah damn, I loved this place, used to go to it when it was back behind a freight elevator.
If this place is part of the building that houses “Time(s)” multi type cuisine restaurant that was shut down the other day, with speculation the building was the reason; could this be the reason for Pick a Pita to evacuate?

this makes me very sad….whenever i had to work late…I would stop at Pick a Pita on my way to port authority for dinner.

oh my GOD! NOOOOO! This is my absolute favorite falafel! GAHHHHHHHHH! And the guys that work in there are so nice! This is the worst news ever.

That low-rise block of cheap restaurants is just ripe for demolition and a 30-story building.

It’s closed for good, or it’s just closed for the day (or maybe a few days)? If not closed for good then maybe due to tonight and tomorrow being a Jewish fast day and perhaps they decided to just have an extended weekend.
